摘要:
There are at least three distinct relationships (or forms of communication) between research and practice: (1) shared-interest communication, (2) research-driven communication, and (3) practice-driven communication.Shared-interest communicationoccurs at the interfaces of a continuum of interests between research and practice.Research-driven communicationrefers to the ways in which researchers attempt to present their findings to clinicians.Practice-driven communicationrefers to the ways that clinicians advocate their interests and concerns to researchers. This article discusses each, assesses their impact on the effective interaction between research and practice, and provides recommendations for developing effective communication.

摘要:
Researchers, practitioners, as well as policy makers have shown increasing concern with persistent gaps between the generation and use of scientific knowledge in educational and therapeutic practices. This article includes an analysis of this issue with a specific focus on childhood language disorders. Two science-practice linkage models are presented with discussion of the applicability of each to improvements in practice. Strategies for integrating research within everyday practices are considered, including case examples that illustrate the formation, processes, and outcomes of partnerships between university-based researchers and practicing speech-language pathologists.

摘要:
Three theses are developed in this article. First, although they share the common goal of striving toward the best intervention services possible, clinical practice and experimental intervention research are different in fundamental and practically significant ways. Second, nonexperimental research, some of which can be implemented by clinicians, provides an essential bridge between experimental investigation and clinical application. Third, professional and academic bodies governing speech-language pathology must take steps to ensure that speech-language professionals in research and clinical practice work in a complementary manner to develop and test the most effective intervention methods possible.

摘要:
This article discusses how clinicians, researchers, and others may critically evaluate information generated by studies of the efficacy of language intervention programs. It is argued that the best evaluation studies build on the strengths of both experimental and nonexperimental approaches to avoid the major criticisms of each. One such approach for consumers to be aware of is the use of matching in nonrandomized studies. Matching allows for meaningful comparison of groups of children who participate in an intervention program with groups who do not. This approach allows researchers to conduct unobtrusive study of educational and clinical settings; at the same time, it allows them to conclude with a greater degree of confidence than with unmatched studies that the intervention is effective.

摘要:
This article includes consideration of various factors influencing research-practice gaps in the assessment and treatment of adults with neurologic communication disorders. Suggestions are provided for activities that clinicians may undertake to use and adapt more effectively the research database to their practice needs.

摘要:
A case is made that children should be intelligible before they begin school in order that the development of normal literacy skills not be hindered by speech. In this article, treatment options for children with phonological impairments are summarized. Information about critical variables that need to be controlled or accounted for in treatment research is discussed, followed by a brief review of four recently published treatment research reports based on different phonological theories. Some of the possible barriers that may deter practitioners from incorporating phonological aspects in treatment and some suggestions for “bridging the gap” are presented.

摘要:
Internet capabilities such as World Wide Web home pages, electronic journals, on-line bibliographies, mailing lists, and chat rooms can be used to build bridges between research and practice in speech-language pathology. Numerous examples of these bridge-building tools that facilitate interaction between researchers, practitioners, and even clients are provided. Cautions while using these bridge-building tools are also presented.
