AbstractIn an earlier time, instances of censorship in US schools centered around three main subjects: use of profane/obscene language, descriptions of sexual/excretory activities, and communism/un‐Americanism. Today, the tempo of citizens' complaints and challenges has increased and the scope of concerns has broadened. The Christian Right has attacked any and all classroom activities or materials which seem (to the attackers) as being inconsistent with ‘family values’ or any other dimension of Fundamentalist Christian Orthodoxy. On the left, a growing number of ‘special interest’ groups (feminists, gays/lesbians, African‐Americans, Hispanics, etc.) have mounted a similarly extensive cluster of complaints/challenges, most under the umbrella of Political Correctness. AbstractThis article explores the particular problems of teaching ‘Children's Literature’. First, it is generally seen as marginal; secondly, and relatedly, it is seen as predominantly a women's subject; thirdly, it frequently involves texts to which students have deep attachments; and lastly, there is a reluctance to engage in the usual ‘LitCrit’. AbstractThe relationship between English departments and special needs coordinators in secondary schools has not always been easy. Different views of language learning have too often remained undiscussed, with the result that literacy programmes become unclear and fragmented in the eyes of students. English departments and special needs coordinators both need to build a climate where eclecticism of approach is seen as essential and where evidenceof what works where and whenis gathered systematically.

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to provoke thought on the role of standard English in the early years of education. It examines the nature and function of a standard and highlights its close relationship with political aims and its potential for liberation and oppression. The reality of language variety and bilingualism is outlined and leads to a discussion of standard English and early schooling. The paper concludes with some suggestions for avoiding the standard English trap.
