摘要:
Developing a new perspective when examining restraints and alternatives to restraints takes commitment from all involved. As regulatory agencies and consumer groups advocate for reduced restraint usage, nursing leaders and educators must foster not only an environment that encourages creativity among staff nurses, but also one that provides resources and support for the development of alternatives to restraints. The following project provides nurse administrators with ideas on how to develop a successful restraints program.

摘要:
The authors review the literature related to competence evaluation of practicing nurses and offer recommendations based on the findings. Data collection procedures included literature search from major databases. A frame of classification was constructed to assess the methodological soundness of the instruments. The ultimate goal of this review is to help nurse administrators locate and evaluate existing instruments to assure safe and qualified nursing care.

摘要:
Occasionally, we wish there were an objective person with whom we could discuss work related issues and possible solutions. Our quarterly Executive Coaching department presents a troublesome work related issue and an executive coach provides objective analysis and professional advice. Examples of situations might be a boss who reneges on a past commitment, decisions about your department that are made frequently without your input, and a boss who micromanages when you reach the middle of your project. Readers are welcome to submit situations (250 words or less) that describe the situation, your behaviors, and your feelings. For selected situations, 1 hour of free telephone coaching will be offered. In print, respondent anonymity will be maintained and situations will be modified as needed to prevent institutional identification. Situations can be emailed to DrSuzSmith @aol.com or mailed to the editorial office address found on the masthead.

摘要:
A healthcare landscape characterized by cost pressures, advancing technologies, staffing shortages, and increasing regulation is the norm for nursing leaders. High performance in these environments requires effective operational structures. These structures must respond to change while maintaining operational stability. An approach to assist nursing leaders in systemic analysis of operational structure is presented here. The approach helps leaders to identify structural inadequacies that limit operational performance.

摘要:
The application of a strategic planning methodology for the discipline of nursing is described in use by a large, nonprofit integrated healthcare system. The methodology uses a transformational leadership assessment tool, quality planning methods, and large group intervention to engage nurses in the implementation of strategies. Based on systems theory, the methodology outlined by the author has application at any level in an organization, from an entire delivery network, to a patient care unit. The author discusses getting started on a strategic planning journey, tools that are useful in the process, integrating already existing business plans into the strategies for nursing, preliminary measures to monitor progress, and lessons learned along the journey.

摘要:
People make decisions all the time using intuition. But what happens when you are asked: “Are you sure your predictions are accurate? How much will a mistake cost? What are the risks associated with this change?” Once a new process is engineered, it is difficult to analyze what would have been different if other options had been chosen. Simulating a process can help senior clinical officers solve complex patient flow problems and avoid wasted efforts. Simulation software can give you the data you need to make decisions. The author introduces concepts, methodologies, and applications of computer aided simulation to illustrate their use in making decisions to improve workflow design.
