摘要:
Basic management principles arc an integral part of nursing practice while the nurse is solely involved in patient care. When the nurse moves into a management position, she must view management as a professional endeavor, and her use of management principles becomes even more significant in her new role. The nurse in a management position is best used as a manager when the position requires both an intimate knowledge of nursing and adeptness at management. Truly effective management can only be accomplished when there is collaboration among all people involved in patient care; this collaboration is best encouraged through committee action.

摘要:
A major recommendation of the National Commission for the Study of Nursing was that the care of individuals be emphasized and expanded as the central clement of nursing practice. This recommendation requires action by directors of nursing service. They are in a key position to create the essential conditions by defining such a role administratively, establishing supporting personnel policies, strengthening the tie between nursing research and practice, and increasing the role of nurses in policy making. It is essential that nursing service directors take initiative in these areas to realize the goal of universal health care for America.

摘要:
Management by objectives is a style of management which may be utilized in a large or small department of nursing service regardless of whether the system is used hospital-wide. Ideally, it is at the top management level that broad overall organizational objectives are set for a target period and from which subordinate levels of management derive their objectives. The use of measurable objectives, mutually agreed upon by a superior and his subordinate, enable one to predict behavior, appraise the soundness of decisions while they are being made, evaluate work performance, analyze one's own experience, and improve one's performance. With the establishment of broad organizational objectives adapted by subordinate level of management, there is less misdirection, less wasted effort, and there is teamwork rather than frustration, friction, and conflict.

摘要:
The return of the inactive nurse to practice is facilitated by an adequate preparation for re-employment. However, the provision of a suitable refresher course is only the initial step in the return process. The returning nurse needs assistance in selecting a position appropriate to her educational and experience background and she must receive an adequate orientation to the specific position. She may question her own wisdom in attempting to return if she is not adequately supervised or if she is given too much responsibility too soon.Innovative approaches to helping nurses keep informed and to keep in touch with their profession during periods of inactivity will help assure a return to practice.

摘要:
Inherent growth needs of nursing staff must be met to insure staff growth and achievement of quality patient care. Certain leadership skills insure the meeting of inherent growth needs. A nursing clinical specialist who understands and practices these skills with staff can provide the stimulus to achieve increased quality of patient care, more efficient use of time and materials, higher staff productivity, and a higher turnover of patients.

摘要:
This is a report of an experiment in faculty development by four hospital schools of nursing. The author describes the objectives and rationale for a joint program of continuing education and events leading to its approval as a federal project grant sponsored by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.Problems of organization, budget, and implementation arc explored. Growth of individual faculty members is highlighted and evaluation results suggest the value of this experiment as a pattern for others, not only for other faculty groups but also for nursing service staff of hospitals and similar health agencies.

摘要:
The proliferation of continuing education programs demonstrates the need for in-service education. The programs generally suffer from lack of acceptance as a major endeavor requiring a high priority. Developing a working environment conducive to continual learning requires nursing administrators to serve as role-models. They must provide a climate that allows learners the freedom to determine their learning needs and to implement change through application of newly learned skills and knowledge.Continuing education courses should consider the eight concerns identified as basic factors in providing a climate for fostering a concept of continuing education that is rewarding to all levels of personnel.
