Twelve-hour shifts in hospitals have resulted in job satisfaction for nurses. But do they benefit patients? These authors studied the difference between g-hour and 12-hour shifls by measuring effects on patient care. Confronted with the need to increase intershift cooperation and communication, one hospital experimented with a team-building effort to develop increased unit cohesiveness. This description of how their team-building program worked and the benefits it brought to the entire nursing departmentprovides a strategy that may be used or adapted in other settings to improve intershift cooperation and reinforce the head nurse in the role of 24-hour manager of the unit.
