摘要:
This article answers the question posed in the title. The author maintains the following factors must exist if a significant computerized nursing information system is to prove successful in clinical settings: a) a strong leader whose training includes research and computer sciences; b) a “good idea” that is practical, researchable, and will attract support; c) a data base amenable to computer manipulation; d) adequate resources, including administrative support, money, hardware, personnel, and authority; and e) successful implementation of the system.

摘要:
To identify the best educational preparation for nursing administrators the author surveyed recent graduates of nine graduate schools of nursing, one school of public health with a graduate program in nursing, and their employers. She reports that graduates of programs emphasizing management and administrative skills are better prepared for administrative roles than are graduates of clinical specialist programs. She argues for increasing the management, financial, labor relations, and other administrative components of graduate school curricula.

摘要:
The national shortage of nurses, which grew to crisis proportions in many communities in the late 1970s, has subsided. Recent evidence suggests that hospital nurse vacancy and turnover rates have declined significantly since 1979. The recent swift reversal in the availability of nurses, from shortage to waiting lists in some hospitals, has taken many by surprise. It also raises the possibility that greater understanding of the factors that influence the market for nurses might make it possible to avert future shortages.

摘要:
What is advanced nursing practice? How can the nurse administrator decide when to employ advanced nurse practitioners? The author suggests a way for differentiating basic from advanced nursing practice. She also identifies conditions that may influence decisions about employing advanced nurse practitioners. Examples of application to situations are provided.

摘要:
It has long been assumed that job satisfaction relates to employee turnover and quality of care. In this article the difficulties of measuring job satisfaction are discussed in light of results from a 6-month assessment by nurse employees in a university-affiliated acute care hospital. The authors found that job satisfaction scores were significantly predicted by respondents' job expectations and the importance they placed on various components of the work situation. The authors conclude that job satisfaction measurement is most valid and reliable when these two predictors are taken into account.
