摘要:
Summary1212 subjects from six endogamous groups were investigated for AlA2BO, MN, Eh (‐C, ‐c,‐D, ‐E)and Duffy blood groups, secretion ofABHsubstances in saliva, threshold determination of P.T.C. taste reaction and colour‐blindness. The results show an interesting pattern of genetical diversity in these six endogamous groups. The findings have been discussed statistically to assess the overall genetical differences in these endogamo

摘要:
Summary1. P.T.C. taste threshold data for 127 families have been given, of which one family has been rejected on account of illegitimacy.2. Ax2test by the ‘2×2’ contingency table indicates that the matings in the families studied were random (x2= 097, P>0.3).3. Analysis of the families by Fisher's method following Race&Sanger (1954) indicated a ‘good fit’ (P>0.1) between the observed and the expected numbers ofT × Tas well asT×t(including t×T) families.4. Fisher's test following Smith (1956) indicated a ‘good fit’ (P>0.1) for the totals of families of each of the types T×T andT × t(alsot × T)–each family containing at least one non‐taster child. But a significant discrepancy (P002).6. Discrepancies have been noticed between the observed and the expected numbers of non‐taster children in the combined family sizes 2 and 3 out ofT × Tmatings, and the family size 4 out ofT×t(andt×T)matings–each producing at least one non‐taster child (P<0.01 and P<0.05, respectively).7. Totals ofx2values for families of all sizes (calculated separately for each size) in respect of the numbers of non‐taster children indicated a significant discrepancy (P0.05) for theT×t(includingt×T)families–each family containing at least one non‐taster child.8. Summing up thex2values calculated on totals under the four different tests following Smith (1956), a singlex2of 13–38 with 4 D.F. was obtained, which finally indicated a significant divergence (P<0.01) between the theory and the data taken as a whole.9. It has been suggested that an assumption of incomplete penetrance (say, about 90 %) of the dominant taste gene might interpret the entire P.T.C. data (including the sib‐pair data of Harris&Kalmus, and Das referred to already) more satisfact

摘要:
SummarySeparate measurements of bone, muscle and fat at ages up to 5 have been made from calf X‐rays of 120 pairs of sibs attending the Oxford Child Health Survey. The degree of sib resemblance in these measurements and in external calf circumference is found to be high, particularly when allowance is made for unavoidable errors of measurement.Sib resemblance in respect of muscle breadth increases with age, while for fat thickness it appears to decrease. In the case of muscle there is some evidence that fluctuations in growth as well as the average rate of growth are genetically controlled. There is no evidence of sex‐linkage. Correlation between different tissues in the same child is negligible.Assessments of skeletal maturity show a moderate correlation with bone diameter, but little association with muscle and none with fat. The amount of measurable sib resemblance is greater when these tissues are examined separately than when they are considered in relation to one another. The Oxford Child Health Survey was launched by the late Prof. John Ryle with assistance from the Medical Research Council; in recent years it has been directed by Dr A. M. Stewart. I am greatly indebted to Dr C. K. Westropp and Dr J. Parfit who were responsible for the clinical work of the survey, to Miss E. Roberts and Miss M. Barnes who took all the X‐rays, to Drs R. M. Acheson, L. Mynors and E. Jefferson who made the assessments of skeletal maturity and to Dr J. M. Tanner for criticisms of the

摘要:
SummaryFollowing a lead given by Haldane (1956), data on sex‐linked recessive Duchenne type muscular dystrophy, reported from Northern Ireland, Northumberland and Durham and Utah, have each been examined by three methods in an attempt to estimate the sex ratio of the mutation rates.Critical examination of both the available data and the methods suggest that there is no evidence at present to support an hypothesis of a sex difference in the mutation rate

摘要:
SummaryThe method of maximum likelihood is used to provide estimates of the ratio of the mutation rate in females and males, for a sex‐linked recessive trait, Duchenne type muscular dystrophy on three surveys from the literature. One of the estimates (from the Northumberland and Durham data) appears to be significantly lower than the other two. There is a corresponding deficit of single affected fraternities in this survey on the assumption that a detectable mutation rate exists. The combined estimate for Northern Ireland and Utah,x =0.3506 ± 0.1110, is taken as the best available estimate. This leads to a sex ratio (μ/v) of 1.1734 which is consistent with equal mutation ra

摘要:
SummaryThe literature on the Lambert family showing ichthyosis hystrix has been fully discussed. Fresh evidence is presented, derived from parish registers, which concerns the pedigree. In consequence of these enquiries it is possible to draft a new pedigree which can be most easily interpreted as representing the effect of an autosomal dominant gene.A very large number of people have co‐operated in the investigations described in the present paper and the writers would like to express their warmest thanks to all of them. Significant contributions to the collection of relevant material were made by many Suffolk clergymen. Among others who gave invaluable assistance were Drs P. J. Hare, J. B. Lyon, Margaret Penrose, Keith Simpson, Messrs D. Charman, S. G. Flick, H. R. Hipwell, W. R. Le Fanu, M. P. Statham and Miss Helen Lang‐Brown. We are grateful to the librarians of the University of California, Mrs Evelyn E. LeBarron and Mrs Margaret D. W. Uridge, for their interest and help in locating rare bibliographical it
