摘要:
Religion and patient care: the functionalist approachThis paper offers an ideal type process which considers any patient, his intimates and hospital chaplain in the wider setting of personal care. It calls attention to an important aspect of patient care which offers a starting point from which to begin assessing the needs of any patient from a complementary perspective. The paper reveals two important consequences of the features of any patient situation for the structuring of whole patient care. The first is that the ill person can be susceptible to certain fundamental characteristics which bring him face‐to‐face with situations in which established practices display an insufficiency for providing mechanisms of adjustment. The second is that spiritual support can be a most important mechanism of adjustment to the aleatory and frustrating facts of these basic characteristics of the patient's existence. Also, it is not only that the ill person may have a need to be helped in this way, but that the appropriate general pattern of action in regard to the source of help is often related to evaluation by nursing and other health service personnel–who are inexpert in this field of care–of the general requirements of any patient situation. This evaluation may have important consequences regarding the completeness of patie

摘要:
Evaluation research: the need for multiple criteriaThe Research Unit was established in 1968 and one of its primary functions since then has been an attempt to evaluate experimental schemes of nurse training. Two of the explicit objectives of the research were to establish whether students could be attracted to such schemes of training and, if so, whether they could be successfully prepared by them to pass State finals examinations. The author is concerned that courses are‘evaluated’too readily in terms of single criterion measures such as pass rates, which may in fact be misleading. The paper argues that evaluation of a training course should involve the question‘Is it worth it?’and this implies a need for the use of multiple c

摘要:
Mutuality in nursing leads to vulnerability for patient and nurse in a psychotherapeutic communityThis paper was written whilst the author was doing the Cassel Hospital course in psychosocial nursing and was written following a particularly difficult weekend duty experienced at the Cassel Hospital. The social defence systems used in general nursing are compared with those used when nursing in a psychotherapeutic community. In such a community staff, especially nurses, by the very nature of their work, meet their patients at a more mutual level, and this can hopefully help to examine anxiety‐provoking situations more honestly, to the greater benefit of the patient.'Mutual', in this sense, refers to a reciprocal relationship which relies on a refined sensitivity in emotion and taste, quickness and acuteness of apprehension and feeling, and a readiness to feel compassion that is not just pity but a complete blend of empathy and understanding. It does not rely on equality, but this absence of equality need not lead to feelings of inferiority on one side and superiority on the other. This kind of‘mutuality’inevitably leads to vulnerability of both nurse and patient and, to be able to use experiences to enable growth, a strong support system becomes nece

摘要:
Self‐image and job satisfaction of the Nigerian nurse: a comparative studyCongruity or lack of it between the perception of student and professional nurses about the self‐image and job satisfaction of the Nigerian nurse was examined. The expectation was that as a result of the socialization processes involved in nursing education, the student nurse and the senior nursing professionals (who are the socializing agents) should not differ significantly on their ratings on the self‐image and job satisfaction of the Nigerian nurse. The subjects were 30 male and female student nurses and 23 male and female professional nurses who scored the Self‐image of the Nurse Scale (SINS) and the Job Satisfaction Scale (JSS). The results showed that the student and the professional nurses were minimally differentiated in their perception of the self‐image of the Nigerian nurse. On the whole the student nurses were more dissatisfied with nursing than the professional nurses. The occupational position of the student nurse was said to have been partially responsible for the di

摘要:
On political consciousness in nursesThe argument presented in this paper centres around the proposition that all nurses need to develop their critical abilities in the understanding and analysis of the socio‐economic and political background to the services of which they are a part as a potentially powerful group of health care workers. The topics under examination in this paper,The Welfare State, Social Thought and Social PlanningandPolitics of Health Care, are used as examples to demonstrate the kind of critical understanding which nurses need to acquire in order to deal with some of the fundamental assumptions that influence their work either directly or indirectly. From the argument follows the conclusion that it is an illusion, and possibly a dangerous one, if nurses continue to believe in the unpolitical nature of nursing as a professional activit

摘要:
Concepts of professionalismThe claim by many occupations to professional status has resulted from lack of precision of definition. The characteristics discussed are those which most writers agree are possessed by professionals and include knowledge, authority for action, community sanction, control and the development of a sub‐culture. Nursing as an occupation is viewed in the light of these characteristics and found wanting. However, one equally important measurement may be that of the attitudes displayed by the members of an occupation and, if these are considered, nursing may be seen to be nearer to the ideal type. The main problem may be that the term‘nurse’in the United Kingdom includes a wide range of practiti

摘要:
The use of case histories to assess nurses’ability to solve clinical problemsNurses’performance in written examinations often bears little relationship to their level of clinical proficiency in the ward. This paper describes a method of making written examinations more relevant to the clinical situation. It describes the development of a case history test which confronts students with the kind of information they have to interpret and act upon in the ward, and which requires them to recall the principles of nursing care and apply them in a way similar to real life. Evidence is presented that tests of this type are more closely linked to clinical performance than are conventional written examinations, and guidelines are given for constructing case history te
