摘要:
Vernacular urban configurations still constitute sources of inspiration for architects and urban designers. However, in most cases, instead of extracting ideas and processes, designers, in order to create an architecture that respects identity and cultural values while meeting environmental and economic requirements, tend to favour the imitation of the older configurations and end up with frozen copies from the past. This paper suggests an approach based on abstract concepts drawn from past experiences and filtered and refined through physical and environmental design variables. One of these variables is examined here and serves as a filtering technique; the shading control.

摘要:
Long-term weather data for Hong Kong were gathered and analysed. Statistical techniques were used to study the 37-year long-term weather characteristics from 1960 to 1996. Four key climatic variables, namely temperature (dry-bulb and wet-bulb), solar radiation (global, direct and diffuse), outdoor illuminance (global, direct and diffuse) and wind conditions were investigated. Frequency of occurrence and cumulative frequency distributions were determined and presented, and implications for building and building services designs were discussed.

摘要:
The rapid changes in radiant conditions outdoors, require a fast response globe thermometer. As part of a research project entitled “Thermal Comfort in Outdoor Urban Spaces”, extensive field studies are being carried out involving environmental monitoring and interviews, thus the development of such an instrument was crucial. This paper describes a series of parametric studies of five 38 mm-diameter globe thermometers, of different thickness and materials, with the objective of reducing the thermometer's response time to approximately 4 min, similar to the duration of the interviews. Contrary to current belief, it is not only the slow heat transfer from the globe to the heat sensor that is responsible for long response times, but the heat capacity of the system as well, and by reducing it, shorter response times were achieved.

摘要:
Sealants installed in building joints are prone to premature failure if the choice of sealants does not match the requirement of their functions. Architects, engineers and building owners thus have to evaluate the suitability for a specific joint. This process is often error-prone. This paper seeks to examine the various types of standard laboratory testing for the performance of sealants as stipulated in ASTM, BS and ISO. The merits and limitations of these standard assessment methods are discussed.

The idea to improve the quality of lighting design in interior spaces has gained importance in the last years. This experimental study concentrates on the quality of lighting and the relation between lighting arrangements and perception. A room having four different lighting arrangements was prepared and the differences between the perception of the participants under each lighting arrangement was analysed.

In one category, the model is to be tilted and normally also rotated [1, 2, 3]. In the other category, the model is to be placed horizontally and normally also stationary [4,5,6].
