AbstractMandibular permanent lateral incisors showing bilateral transposition and ectopic eruption were seen beneath primary first molars on bitewing radiographs in a female aged 9 years. This report chronicles management of the case during the mixed dentition period. Appropriate space maintenance after extraction of mandibular primary first molars, cuspids and lateral incisors on both sides facilitated eruption and repositioning of the permanent lateral incisors without the need to sever supracrestal gingival fibres.

AbstractThis final article in a series of three covering general practice aspects of erosion‐abrasion presents a three‐phase system for clinical management of erosive‐abrasive damage. The first phase comprises pre‐restorative case evaluation, initial measures to control factors predisposing to continued erosion‐abrasion and where necessary the provision of acrylic overlays to restore facial height. In the second phase the teeth are systematically restored using an acid‐etch composite resin technique; guidance for comfortable occlusion is provided by the patient acceptance method. The third phase comprises follow‐up, including monitoring of salivary and bacteriological parameters, maintenance of the restorations and modifications of preventive measures necessary to preserve the dentition restored by multiple composite therapy. AbstractThe objective of the study was to evaluate the longterm survivals or longevity of dental restorations placed in selected patients from different practice environments in two countries. The case histories of 46 adult patients with 622 restorations placed in three private practices in Pakistan were followed for a minimum of 10 years, and compared with similar assessments of 50 adult patients with 966 restorations placed in a dental hospital in Australia. Amalgam and composite resin restorations showed similar survivals in both countries, but cast gold restorations had much lower survivals in the Pakistan group of patients. In both countries, restoration survivals were significantly better in females, and when patients attended less frequently for treatment. For the Australian group, changes in dental operators also gave significantly better survivals, and there were significant restoration survival differences present between the three practices in Pakistan.

AbstractIt has been recorded that the occurrence rate of more than one canal in the mandibular first premolar varies between different races. This report presents the diagnosis and treatment of a mandibular first premolar with multiple root canals in a young male Asian. It is noted that knowledge of canal morphology, careful interpretation of the radiograph, and tactile sense during treatment constitute the major factors in achieving success with endodontic therapy in cases of complex root canal morphology.

AbstractThe retention in root canals of Flexi‐Posts, Para‐Posts and Brasseler/Vlock‐Posts was measured using tensile and compressive/shear forces. Forty‐two extracted maxillary anterior teeth were embedded in self‐curing acrylic resin and treated endodontically. Each root canal was prepared with the appropriate matching drills for the post‐core system chosen. Each post‐core was cemented in the canal with zinc phosphate cement. A tensile force was applied along the long axis of each tooth and the force needed to dislodge the post‐core was recorded. There was no difference in retention between the small diameter posts, but the difference between the medium and the large diameter posts, however, was significant. In the medium diameter post group, the Flexi‐Post was approximately twice as retentive as the other two post‐core systems evaluated. In the second series of tests compressive/shear force was applied at an angle of 130 degrees to the long axis of the tooth. AbstractTwo different types of hydroxylapatite ceramics were examined histologically to assess their effects on the healing of standardized bone defects drilled in the mandibular bone of beagles. AbstractWhile there are many applications of lasers in dentistry, few have advantages over existing technology. To date, lasers should be considered to be an adjunct to conventional techniques. There are also considerations of cost and rapid obsolescence of current laser equipment. AbstractThe first requirement for adequate performance of an air turbine handpiece is sufficient power. Suppliers of such handpieces do not provide data on the power produced by their equipment. A method for determining the torque, speed and hence power during simulated operation is described. Forty‐one new and used handpieces were tested. Maximum speeds up to 500 000 rpm, maximum torques up to 2.33 N.mm and maximum power up to 29.6 watt were observed. The maximum power was produced at between 49 and 79 per cent of the free‐running speed. A relationship between maximum power and stall torque was noted. The maximum torque is at stall for ball‐bearing units. The stall torque can be easily determined by a simple stall torque test which is described. Using this test, the performance of handpieces can be easily checked in the clinic. The one air‐bearing handpiece tested performed in a manner similar to the others, except that stall occurred below 60

AbstractDental therapists and assistants frequently experience musculoskeletal complaints associated with their work. In order to plan and implement programmes aimed at reducing the number of these complaints, the level and location of physical discomfort experienced by dental workers at work was documented to identify potential problem areas associated with dental practice.
