摘要:
AbstractOne hundred and thirty‐eight non‐undercut Class V abrasion lesions were restored using glass ionomer cement overlaid by composite resin. Four techniques were used: enamel and glass ionomer acid‐etched, enamel only acid‐etched, ionomer only acid‐etched, and neither enamel nor glass ionomer acid‐etched. The restorations were examined after six months, one year and two years and evaluated for integrity and marginal staining, the latter employing a direct clinical method and a set of photographic standards. The relative failure of restorations at six months was maintained at subsequent time intervals, and at two years the failure incidence was 10, 35, 43 and 58 per cent for the above four techniques respectively. Marginal staining was most evident around those restorations for which only the glass ionomer had been etched. The results indicate that the retention of composite to etched glass ionomer is similar to that of composite to dentine using many dentine bonding agents. The several advantages of glass ionomers over dentine bonding agents ar

摘要:
AbstractPosts are normally used to aid core retention and to provide tooth support, although a significant minority question the use of posts in the latter role. A direct relationship is thought to exist between the quantity of sound tooth structure and tooth strength and care is required when preparing teeth to accept posts. Post configuration is of over‐riding importance in determining retention and support and the effect on retention of small increases to post length should not be over emphasized. Because accurate post fit is important to maximize both retention and support, direct fabrication techniques using matched post/reamer systems are recommende

摘要:
AbstractNinety‐five patients with periodontal disease each had subgingival plaque samples collected from four sites (one from each quadrant) in their mouths. The relative proportions of spirochaetes, motile rods and cocci were determined using dark field microscopy and the proportion of anaerobic to aerobic microorganisms calculated after culture. In addition, clinical recordings were made. The only significant correlations observed were between probing depth or attachment loss and the proportion of cocci in the plaque (negative association), probing depth or attachment loss and sites which were suppurating or displayed a radiolucent interdental crest (positive association), and the percentage of cocci and sites with a radiolucent interdental crest (negative association). Partial correlation analysis controlling for probing depth or attachment loss showed that a significant inverse association between the percentages of cocci and the presence of a radiolucent interdental crest remained. No significant associations were observed between clinical signs such as bleeding on probing or suppuration and the microbiological assays. Overall there was a poor correlation between many of the signs thought by some to indicate periodontal disease activit

摘要:
AbstractThe role of removable appliances with springs for the treatment of teeth in anterior and posterior cross‐bite is discussed. The indications for their use (that is, case selection), and their manipulation are examined. Cases are presented where removable appliances are the appliances of choice in the first stage of the correction of a posterior cross‐bite, the final treatment being completed with fixed appliances. The ease of correcting and retaining various maxillary teeth which may be in cross‐bite is disc

摘要:
AbstractThere is some controversy about the significance of the wettability of the unfilled resin bonding agent that is generally recommended for prior application when placing a composite resin restoration. It has been suggested that the degree of viscosity does not matter. However, when investigating the union which is developed between composite resin and glass ionomer cement in the ‘sandwich technique’, it was noted that when using certain composite resins and their prescribed bonding resins the failure under tensile stress was adhesive at the union rather than cohesive in the cement. Further investigation showed that the bonding resins involved in these failures were more viscous than those bonding resins used in the more successful unions. In this investigation the contact angle of the bonding resin on the surface of glass ionomer cement was used as the measure of viscosity. It is suggested that the degree of viscosity of the bonding resin is significant in the success or otherwise of the ‘sandwich techn

摘要:
AbstractWith the increased popularity of contact sports and encouragement to participate at an early age, the role of the dental profession in relation to prevention of dental and other orofacial sporting injuries has become more important. Provision of professionally‐fitted (custom) mouthguards for persons involved in contact sports, recognition of the ‘injury prone dentition’, and expertise in immediate management of dental injuries form the basis of sports dentistry. The aim of this review paper is to increase professional awareness and interest. Additionally, it is hoped to stimulate dentists to become involved as sporting club consul

摘要:
AbstractDetailed clinical, psychological and illness behaviour information was obtained from 43 patients with temporomandibular joint pain dysfunction. A discriminant function analysis was performed on the multiple variables to test their effectiveness as predictors of a successful response to simple conservative therapy. The questionnaire and statistical methodology employed are described in detail. It was found that clinical, psychological, and illness behaviour factors when used alone were poor predictors (less than 60 per cent) of treatment outcome. However, grouping clinical and psychological factors resulted in over 80 per cent successful prediction.

摘要:
AbstractExtracted teeth, root‐filled by single cone and lateral condensation techniques, using friction fitted and solvent (chloroform and eucalyptol) dip‐fitted primary gutta‐percha cones, were compared with respect to apical sealing as measured by length of dye penetration and frequency of no dye penetration. Overall, the single cone techniques were significantly more effective than lateral condensation techniques regarding length of dye penetration. The single cone techniques were not significantly different from the lateral condensation technique which employed chloroform dip‐fitted primary guttapercha cones regarding length of dye penetration. The single cone and lateral condensation techniques which utilized chloroform dip‐fitted cones ranked first and second with respect to frequency of no dye pe

摘要:
AbstractA technique to provide cement spacing for cast post‐cores prior to construction of their crowns is described. The axial lift of crowns cemented with zinc phosphate was greater, but not significantly, for crowns constructed on non‐spaced post‐cores compared with crowns constructed on spaced post‐cores. Three materials were evaluated to determine their effectiveness in providing cement spacing for post‐cores. The phenomenon of post‐core ‘wedging’ during luting
