摘要:
All hemoglobin sequences of Osteichthyes determined so far have been limited to the division Euteleostei, while the European eel,Anguilla anguilla(L.), belongs to the division Taeniopaedia; its sequences are thus phylogenetically important. As a preliminary to sequence determination, the amino acid composition of the two hemoglobin components ofA. anguillawas determined. As expected, the data were similar to those of the American eel, while more differences were found with respect to the Japanese species.

Adult male Japanese quail(Coturnix coturnix japonica)were starved for 3 and 5 days and then refed for the next 15 day, Blood samples were collected before and after the starvation period and also after 1,3,5,7 and 15 days of refeeding. Starvation for 3 and 5 days decreased (27 and 372 respectively) the total body weight and increased the blood haemoglobin levels to the tune of 16% and 17% over the controls. Serum acid phosphatase (9%), aspartate ami‐notransferase (27%), cholesterol (58%)and lipids (44%) increased while alkaline phosphatase (89%) and glucose (11%) decreased after 3 days of starvation. Serum alanine aminotransferase, proteins and free amino acids remained unaffected after 3 days of starvation. After 5 days of starvation, aspartate aminotransferase (23%) and glucose (35%) increase wile acid phosphatase (11%), alkaline phosphatase (38%), cholesterol (7%), lipids (30%), proteins (39%) and free amino acids (38%) decreased as compared to respective controls. No effect could be detected on alanine aminotransferase. After 15 days of refeeding most parameters studied were normalized but glucose, cholesterol and lipids still differed from the control values.

摘要:
Xenopus laevisadult females exposed to progressive water deprivation and maintained under dry conditions for two weeks showed a statistically significant increase in serum aldosterone and cortico‐sterone levels in response to osmotic stress. These results are in accordance with those previously obtained by us in males from this typically aquatic species subjected to the same experimental conditions. In females returned to water for one week after a two week period of dehydration, serum aldosterone and corticosterone returned to values approximating those of control.

The association‐dissociation behaviour inTodarodes sagittatushemocyanin has been studied by sedimentation velocity measurements at different pH values and in the absence and presence of a number of anions and cations. In the absence of salts the sedimentation pattern is dominated (about 1002) by a relatively low M.W. species (20 S), while 10 mM CaCl2and increasing pH (above 65) stabilize a larger (30 S) species. The highest aggregation (60 S) state reaches a maximum population (about 70%) at pH15and 100 mM CaCl2as well as at 600 mM NaCl or KC1. Parallel tests of the functional behaviour of the system allow a distinction between tertiary and quaternary effects of the various ions, and reveal, within a complex pattern of interactions, the outstanding role of Cl‐ions as strong enhancers of the.O2affinity. The above data are used as a basic to explain some physiological questions concerning the nutritional habits of these animals.

Two circulating cell types are present in the freshwater snailPlanorbarius corneus:spreading and round haemocytes. A study with the peroxidase‐DAB technique seems to show that the former are involved in agglutinin synthesis.

摘要:
Preliminary results of karyological analysis of the Israeli garden dormouse are reported. The chromosomes ofEliomys melanurus fromthe northern Negev Desert are described. The karyotype shows a diploid number of 2n = 48 (aFN= 86). These results reinforce the discordance between morphotypes and karyotypes observed in the genusEliomys, showing the occurrence of different chromosome numbers also in themelanurus‐groupof subspecies.

Data on the system of chromosomal variability of the garden dormouse,Eliomys, are reported. Ten populations from Italy, Austria, and Morocco were analyzed cytogenetically. Five different di‐ploid numbers (2n = 46, 48, 50, 52, 54) were found and the karyotypes were compared analyzing G and C banding patterns. The G‐band analysis demonstrated that the European karyotypes (2n = 48, 50, 52, 54) originated through successive Robertsonian fissions, involving the metacentric pairs 12, 13, and 7. The Moroccan population (2n = 46) lacks the smallest acrocentric pair (No. 23). The comparison of the G‐band pattern between the European and the Israeli 48 chromosome dormice revealed chromosomal rearrangement of the largest subtelocentric (pair No. 1). It is suggested that the 48 chromosome karyotype is ancestral.

Genetic differentiation and divergence were analyzed among the circum‐Mediterranean chromosomal forms of the genusEliomys.Twelve populations from Spain, Italy, Austria, Israel, and Morocco with five different karyotypes (2n = 46, 48, 50, 52, and 54) were investigated by electrophoretic analysis at 41 gene loci. The observed values of genetic variation were within the range generally reported for other rodents; the overall mean heterozygosity for all the populations sampled was 0.06, ranging from 0.01 to 0.12. The mean value of genetic distance between European and Middle East‐North African populations wasD=0.248, indicating the presence of two distinct evolutionary lines in the genusEliomys.Genetic distance between Moroccan (2n = 46) and Israeli (2n = 48) populations wasD =0.136. Values of genetic distance among the European populations were lower and ranged from 0.009 to 0.132, indicating a much more recent origin for the four chromosomal forms (2n = 48, 50, 52, and 54). The taxonomic status and the phylogenetic relationships among chromosomal forms of genusEliomysare discussed.

Diploid modal numbers of 2n = 44, and 2N = 43 for different specimens ofOphidion barbatumL., andParopbidion vassali(Risso) in populations of the Gulf of Palermo are reported. An inter‐individual polymorphism due to Robertsonian fusion is suggested for these species.
