摘要:
A Landsat image depicting high flood conditions on 2 February 1974 on the Darling River flood plain in the Bourke region of New South Wales, Australia, shows streamlines of light and dark toned water due to different sediment concentrations and particle size. These streamlines, when observed at different flood stages, define the spatial pattern of flooding by showing the location of areas of active flow or ‘floodways’.

摘要:
The Etajima fire of 1978 in Japan was used to assess the accuracy of a method of classification, mapping and area estimation of the devastation caused by forest fire using Landsat MSS data. The classification and mapping method developed was limited to field sizes of about 10 km × 10 km, and the registration of Landsat data for mapping was performed by affine transformation using corresponding ground control points both on the Landsat imagery and the topographical map.

Acoustic continuous-wave measurements are presented, which were carried out during June 1978 in the North Sea at a water depth of 30 m. The source was operated at a frequency of 295 Hz and the signal was recorded by two hydrophones at a distance of 1100 m south and east, respectively, from the source. The observed fluctuations of the acoustic amplitude and phase are analysed for periods from 10 min up to 2 hours and are compared with simultaneously measured currents. A theory is developed with the objective of relating the acoustic fluctuations to motions of the sea. For the considered periods and the density stratification during the experiment it is assumed that the observed currents are due to internal waves. The theoretical results agree well with the measurements.

A comparative analysis between the traditional acoustic pulse-modulated (ac-pm) and an acoustic continuous wave (ac-cw) RASS is presented. It is shown that the ac-cw mode is superior to the ac-pm mode with respect to wind interference and reproducibility of the data. These results are supported by examples of measurements for the ac-pm RASS as well as for an experimental version of an ac-cw RASS.

Current and archived satellite data offer new opportunities for atmospheric research and monitoring in the marine environment. This paper reviews capabilities for remote sensing of sea-surface temperature and a variety of tropospheric parameters including temperature profiles, water vapour, rain, aerosol and surface winds. A detailed discussion of factors which influence the accuracy of sea-surface temperature measurements is given as a case study in satellite data reduction considerations. Improving accuracy and coverage of marine meteorological conditions provides data which enhance ongoing studies of marine weather and macroscale air-sea chemical exchange. An integrated marine tropospheric measurement system is proposed which stresses the need for combining satellites, aircraft and sea-surface platforms on a continuing basis in future global monitoring efforts.

摘要:
The effects of heavy metal stress on leaf reflectance of sugar maple (Acer saccharumMarsh) seedlings were examined. Sugar maple seedlings treated with anomalous amounts of heavy metals in the rooting medium exhibited an increased leaf reflectance over the entire range of investigated wavelengths, from 475 to 1650 nm. These results conform to those of a previous investigation in the visible wavelengths from 475 to 660 nm, but tend to contradict the previous study in the near infrared wavelengths from 1000 to 1650 nm. The differences may possibly be due to different water regimes in the two investigations.

摘要:
The theoretical background for a remote sensing method is derived, potentially applicable for determining chemical and physicochemical characteristics of natural and man-made surface films. The presented theory makes use of the bond existing between rheological surface parameters and wind-excited waves. Wind wave tunnel results and a preliminary remote sensing experiment in the Ligurian Sea indicate that this method appears to be a feasible approach.

摘要:
The Taupo volcanic zone is a graben of complex structure in central North Island, New Zealand. A three-tiered survey technique involving (i) regional mapping of structural features (notably lineaments and circular features), from Landsat MSS band 7 imagery augmented by (ii) air photo interpretation of selected areas, and (iii) field surveys suggest alternative interpretations to those generally accepted of the fault patterns and characteristics of the Taupo volcanic zone.

Digital image processing (DIP) has been a primary reason for the emergence of remote sensing as an effective means of natural resources assessment. Increasing complexity and decreasing cost of digital hardware enable fast manipulation of data for maximum information extraction, which would be quite difficult if not impossible with classical photographic interpretation.
