摘要:
This paper describes the Indian experience in evolving a satellite-based remote-sensing system. The experimental Earth observation programme represented by the Bhaskara-1 and -2 satellites are discussed to highlight the different components of a satellite-based remote-sensing mission. This is followed by a presentation of the key elements of the Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellite mission with particular reference to the details of IRS-1, the first of the planned satellites. IRS-1 represents a major step in the transition from an experimental to an operational satellite-based remote-sensing system in India.

摘要:
The present study was directed towards studying the impact of the Ukai-Kakrapar irrigation project on the ecology of the command area with particular reference to changes in cropping pattern and land degradation due to waterlogging/salinity. The data used were multitemporal (1972-1981) LANDSAT imagery of the entire command area, multitemporai colour infrared plus black-and-white aerial photography and multispectral scanner data over a test area of about 1200 km2collected from November 1980 to February 1982. Land-use maps for the entire command area at 1:250 000 scale (LANDSAT) and land-use/cropping-pattern maps for the test area at 1:12 500 scale (aerial photography) have been prepared. The results indicate that due to the introduction of large-scale irrigation, the cropping pattern has changed and the acreage under heavy perennial crops such as sugar-cane and banana has increased beyond permissible limits resulting in a rapid rise in the water-table in the area. The areas delineated as waterlogged and salt-affected from the aerial and LANDSAT imagery, when correlated with the subsoil water-table data, were found to have the water-table within 0-1 5 to 1-5-3-0 m.

摘要:
The Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh has been mapped using LANDSAT data and reconnaissance-level forest-type maps have been prepared using visual and computer-aided techniques. A comparative study of two interpretation techniques has been carried out. The results of the study reveal that satellite remote sensing can be used for broad forest-type mapping and for monitoring degradation processes in the north-eastern region of the country; in this region resources information is limited and. due to fast changes, the information collected by conventional methods becomes outdated.

The automatic interpretation of multispectral digital data obtained from LANDSAT as well as from an airborne multispectral scanner using an interactive computer system and visual interpretation of colour composites of LANDSAT imagery and aerial photographs of a dry deciduous forest tract were used for evaluating the discrimination capabilities of each technique and for comparative evaluation. While visual interpretation of LANDSAT imagery could give only general information, such as contiguity of vegetation cover, digital analysis of the same yielded more detailed information, such as teak-bearing and non-teak-bearing regions. The analysis of airborne multispectral data, in the present state of the art, for performing forest surveys and making maps is limited. Aerial photographs are very useful for mapping forest land features and stock, which can be done more reliably than could be done by ground surveys. Infrared photographs show better promise in mapping forest features. The integration of multitemporal data and the incorporation of digitized additional information into the data stream for the improvement of digital analysis are suggested. Acquisition of data including aerial photographs for general surveys during a period prior to leaf fall in a deciduous forest is also recommended.

摘要:
The fact that groundwater in hard-rock formations is generally confined to fissures, fractures, joints and weathered zones makes space imagery extremely useful when prospecting for groundwater in hard-rock areas. Keeping this in mind, multitemporal LANDSAT imagery of the Saurashtra region has been studied by employing visual/manual-interpretation techniques. Various hydrogeomorphological features, such as abandoned channels, buried channels, lineaments, water bodies, vegetation and floodplains, were mapped at a scale of 1:250 000. Using these maps, areas with groundwater potential were identified. Resistivity surveys were conducted in selected areas. Using these results, sites for exploratory drilling were chosen. The pumping-test results at most of the sites were quite encouraging. The present study therefore demonstrates the usefulness of remotely sensed data in groundwater exploration.

A major flood occurred in the Sahibi basin in August 1977. From satellite images, the area inundated was delineated using a multispectral data analysis system. This was compared with a map based on aerial photographs showing the flooded area and was found to be satisfactory.

摘要:
Remote-sensing techniques were employed for evaluating the hydro-geological conditions of southern districts of Tamil Nadu, India, in two phases. In the first phase a satellite remote-sensing survey was carried out during 1977-1979. This was followed by systematic groundwater investigations in the above area (phase II). Detailed studies such as aerial photo-interpretation, field investigations and ground data collection were made in four selected test sites to confirm the findings of the phase 1 regional study. The above-mentioned two-phase study provided quicker and more reliable hydrogeological information for rapid groundwater development.

摘要:
Standard methods of digital processing and enhancement techniques have been followed to generate linearly stretched band products, band-to-band ratio images and normal and ratio colour composites from LANDSAT multispectral data on computer compatible tapes for nine test areas in the Singhbhum Precambrian mineralized belt. The software has been developed at the Space Applications Centre Laboratory, Ahmedabad, The data products have been subjected to general assessment and geological evaluation by visual interpretation methods. The study has resulted in a number of significant conclusions regarding utility and optimization of data products, stratigraphic lithologic and structural interpretations, identifying guides for mineralization and spectral characterization of major rock types.

LANDSAT data comprising eight scenes in the northern and central part of Orissa State, in eastern India were interpreted visually for delineation of target areas for mineral exploration, Even though this area has been mapped and studied in considerable detail LANDSAT data have been found to be very useful in redefining the tectonic structure, correlation of regional features and mapping of hitherto unmapped features. Subsequently one scene (path 152 row 047) was digitally analysed and enhanced for delineation of bauxitic lateritic plateaux and for comparison with visual interpretation.
