摘要:
AbstractEvaluation for metal and radionuclide contamination associated with selected inactive uranium mill tailings repositories required the installation of monitoring wells in both shallow unconfined and deep artesian aquifer systems. To prevent ionic exchange between the dissolved cationic metals and the cations in bentonitic drilling fluids, organic‐based fluids were used during the drilling and installation of monitoring wells. Experience gained at three western U.S. sites involving inactive uranium mill tailings indicates organic drilling fluids can be used to advance drill holes in soil materials ranging from saturated silts and fine sands to unsaturated gravels. However, it has been determined that certain types of these organic fluids can clog very narrow screen slots and remain present in well discharge, even after several hours of well cleaning. Certain types of organic drilling fluids appear to be preferable for these types of water chemistry studie

摘要:
AbstractA dozen case histories of actual waste site puzzles or apparent anomalies, which are initially counterintuitive, are presented. The article emphasizes practical needs for multiple hypotheses, multidisciplinary analyses and open‐minded approaches to solve the puzzles. The article recounts how solutions were found to the selected puzzles and provides the solution

摘要:
AbstractA subsurface water (vadose zone or ground water) extractor is described. Construction materials were Teflon and a porous ceramic suction cup. The unique features are: •Check valves are not needed. •Complete retention of water sample in a 1.8L capacity reservoir, even if vacuum is lost or when the reservoir is pressurized to transfer sample to ground surface and the collection bottle. •The extractor can usually be retrieved if the access well and well head as described are used. The ceramic cup can then be replaced if necessary and the extractor reused at another site. The water extractor is not suitable for obtaining samples for analysis of highly volatile pollutants.Up to four of these water extractors were used to monitor the quality of percolating urban runoff water and top of the ground water table (20 to 30m) beneath retention/recharge basins. The presence of water in the basins requires constructing a sealed borehole annular space, a watertight well head, and seal around the Teflon access tubes to the extractor at a control box containing the valves in the a

摘要:
AbstractThe possible mine will removeagently, less than 50 feet per mile, westerly dipping Springfield coal from an area covered by glacial till and some channel sands and gravel. The area is flat, with less than 20 feet of relief in a square mile. The channel sands and gravels, the till and the bedrock are capable of yielding ground water at 5 to 75,3 to 10, and 1 to 10 gallons per minute (gpm), respectively. The ground water in the drift and the shallow bedrock is calcium‐bicarbonate type, contrasting with the sodium‐bicarbonate type in the deep bedrock. The surface mine will feature selective handling of overburden. The probable hydrologic consequences of the mine will be 1) a short‐term, areally limited dewatering, 2) an increase in dissolved solids, 3) a change in ground water chemistry in some areas to a calcium‐bicarbonate sulfate water, 4) an increase in ground water storage, and 5) a new integrated surface water system. The proposed ground water monitoring system will include seven monitoring wells in the glacial material and one in the bedrock. The primary effort in ground water monitoring to the west of the mine will be to detect changes in the quality of the ground water, whereas to the east, changes in both quality and quantity will need to be monitored inte
