摘要:
A data set concerning two processes for drilling holes in rock is presented in the context of an actual consulting session. The problem is easily understood and has important intrinsic value, and the data set is extremely rich pedagogically.

摘要:
We show that the power functions of a class of nonparametric tests for the equality of two scale parameters do not approach 1 as the ratio of the parameters approaches infinity. The class of tests, known as linear rank tests, is shown to have a fundamental flaw when applied to scale parameters, resulting in low power when the sample sizes are small.

摘要:
Properties ofP–PandQ–Qprobability plots for visually assessing the fit of probability models are reviewed. It is shown how to construct families of curves for standardizedP–Pplots, which are useful for identifying viable alternatives to a proposed probability model. The effectiveness of such curves is illustrated with plots of real and simulated data. Percentiles of a related correlation test of goodness of fit are presented for testing the fit of either the normal, exponential, or Gumbel distribution with unknown location and scale parameters.

摘要:
We have recently had the rare opportunity to open the door on a Biostatistical Core Unit within a Mental Health Clinical Research Center specializing in the multidisciplinary inquiry of schizophrenia. Based on the literature, our previous consulting experience, and the experience of colleagues, we implemented policies and procedures that avoided common problems facing consulting organizations and maximized effective collaboration between researchers and statisticians. This is an example of the application of policies, which involved assigning high priority to education, making ourselves available for consultation and collaboration, and developing an environment that fostered concordant research.

摘要:
Statistical consulting is examined in terms of the stages of the first consultation, roles that a consultant can assume, and challenges associated with statistical consulting in a university. Some of the challenges that are discussed are (a) dealing with the human side of consulting, (b) consulting on an extremely wide range of research problems, (c) coping with clients having diverse statistical backgrounds, (d) dispelling inappropriate expectations about what statisticians can and cannot do, and (e) contending with a university reward system that penalizes those who engage in statistical consulting as opposed to those who pursue their own research.

摘要:
In this departmentThe American Statisticianpublishes articles, reviews, and notes of interest to teachers of the first mathematical statistics course and of applied statistics courses. The department includes the Accent on Teaching Materials section; suitable contents for the section are described under the section heading. Articles and notes for the department, but not intended specifically for the section, should be useful to a substantial number of teachers of the indicated types of courses or should have the potential for fundamentally affecting the way in which a course is taught.

摘要:
This article shows how one should properly conduct a paired-sample comparison of means in a test–retest situation where only a subset of the population retakes the exam. For example, suppose all who fail an exam are given the opportunity to retake a similar exam. If the usual paired-samplettest is conducted from data in this setting, the “regression effect” may lead to the incorrect conclusion that some intervention (such as remedial tutoring) has been effective in raising the scores when this is not necessarily true. A correct test when the mean score for the first exam is known is a test involving the intercept for a simple regression model.

摘要:
The purpose of this article is to provide a simple proof for the Poisson approximation to power series distributions. As special cases we obtain the well-known Poisson approximations to the binomial and negative binomial distributions. The proof is based on the continuity theorem for probability generating functions presented in Feller (1968). The result illustrates one justification to use Poisson models as suitable descriptions of phenomena that are the cumulative effect of a large number of improbable events.
