Statistical computer programs are becoming increasingly accessible to people with limited statistical training. More intelligent statistical software is clearly needed. In this article, new or improved offerings—ranging from computer-based indexes of the literature to expert statistical systems—are discussed and illustrated. Three general levels of statistical software are differentiated: computerized statistical answering and referral services, expert guidance embedded in statistical programs, and automated statistical consultation and data analysis. The first of these is already feasible and is being implemented in various ways. Embedding expert guidance in statistical programs is a technically challenging, but highly worthwhile, undertaking. Automating statistical consulting and data analysis in the form of a statistical expert system is fraught with difficulties; the best chances of success appear to be in researching specialized modules. Possible features of an expert system module for product-life data analysis are briefly described.

Tests for redundancy of variables in linear two-group discriminant analysis are well known and frequently used. We give a survey of similar tests, including the one-sampleT2as a special case, in the situation in which only the mean vector (but no covariance matrix) is available in one sample. Then we show that a relation between linear regression and discriminant functions found by Fisher (1936) can be generalized to this situation. Relating regression and discriminant analysis to a multivariate linear model sheds more light on the relationship between them. Practical and didactical advantages of the regression approach toT2tests and discriminant analysis are outlined.

Proper scoring rules of subjective probability assessments have been shown to be separable into distinct calibration and refinement components. This article presents a graphical description of this separation theorem as applied to the Brier score (quadratic loss) of assessed probabilities for a sequence of observable events. Configurations of achievable calibration, refinement, and Brier scores are exhibited in three-dimensional space and by projection into interpretable subspaces. Relationships of calibration and refinement to the usual sum-of-squares partition in analysis of variance are denoted. Controversy concerning the implications of long-run calibration for probability theory based solely on the principle of coherence is outlined.

Matched sampling is a method for selecting units from a large reservoir of potential controls to produce a control group of modest size that is similar to a treated group with respect to the distribution of observed covariates. We illustrate the use of multivariate matching methods in an observational study of the effects of prenatal exposure to barbiturates on subsequent psychological development. A key idea is the use of the propensity score as a distinct matching variable.

It is well known that the correlation matrix has a central role in the analysis of multivariate data. The inverse of the correlation matrix, however, also has important interpretations. An exposition of some of the properties connected with the inverse of the correlation matrix is provided and its use in the analysis of multivariate data is described.
