摘要:
How is the ambiguous concept of relative importance for independent variables handled in the scientific literature? We sampled from a population of recent papers withrelative importance(or the equivalent) in their titles. We found widespread apparent desire to make relative-importance statements, but little self-conscious interest in interpretation or in looking at more than one specification of the concept. We were unhappy to find that a substantial fraction (one-fifth) of the papers used statistical significance to measure relative importance.

摘要:
This article compares the accuracy of the median unbiased estimator with that of the maximum likelihood estimator for a logistic regression model with two binary covariates. The former estimator is shown to be uniformly more accurate than the latter for small to moderately large sample sizes and a broad range of parameter values. In view of the recently developed efficient algorithms for generating exact distributions of sufficient statistics in binary-data problems, these results call for a serious consideration of median unbiased estimation as an alternative to maximum likelihood estimation, especially when the sample size is not large, or when the data structure is sparse.

摘要:
The Iowa-curve methodology is based on the use of survival curves and is commonly employed for estimating the useful life of industrial property subject to depreciation charges. This article is an overview of this methodology. We point out some of the problems associated with it, and suggest ways of rectifying them. When there is paucity of retirement data for a single group of properties, the methodology calls for the consolidation of properties from different groups. We point out that such consolidations can lead to the gross underestimation of useful life due to an apparent paradox, which is reminiscent of Simpson's paradox.

摘要:
This article considers uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimation of estimable parameters when observations come from a certain class of discrete distributions with support depending on the parameter. An example of Stigler (1972) comes as a special case, where all parametric functions are estimable and have uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimators.

摘要:
A goodness-of-fit test (based on sample entropy) for normality was given by Vasicek. The test, however, can be applied only to the composite hypotheses. In this article an extended test of fit for normality is introduced based on Kullback—Leibler information. The Kullback—Leibler information is an extended concept of entropy, so the test can be applied not only to the composite hypotheses, but also to the simple hypotheses. The power comparisons of the proposed test with some other tests are illustrated and discussed.

摘要:
Unexperienced users of statistical methods are sometimes confused by seeming contradictions between the results obtained by univariate variable-by-variable analyses and those obtained by multivariate methods. This article provides some teaching aids that I found useful for explaining the seemingly paradoxical situations to a mathematically untrained audience. Six typical situations are introduced in graphical form and supplemented with numerical examples, illustrating the notion of redundancy of variables and the meaning of partial statistics arising in multiple regression and discriminant analysis.
