Thirty outpatients with panic disorder (PD) were treated at an anxiety clinic using a symptom-focused approach. Thirteen (43%) had no history of major depressive disorder (MDD), 12 (40%) had a history of secondary MDD, and 5 (17%) had history of primary MDD. The outcome was equally good in patients with no history of MDD (77% had good or excellent outcomes) and patients with a history of secondary MDD (83% had good or excellent outcomes). Patients with a history of primary MDD had the worst outcomes. These findings agree with earlier studies showing that secondary MDD does not adversely affect prognosis of patients presenting for treatment of PD.

The importance of disturbances in time experience in endogenous depression (melancholia) has long been under discussion. In the present study alterations of time experience were examined by means of time estimation experiments. 25 endogenous depressive patients (according to ICD-9) underestimated prospectively a 30-second interval by 6 s, whereas 12 healthy controls overestimated this interval by more than 10 s. The results are based on eight successive measurements over a period of 2 days. In the endogenous depressives, a feeling of being unwell was accompanied by a more pronounced time estimation error than a relatively good state of well-being. The influence of various patient data on the results of time estimation is also discussed in detail. The findings show clearly that time estimation provides a satisfactory delineation between depressive patients and healthy controls.

The charts of 61 children and adolescents admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital for Children in Aarhus, Denmark, in the period 1970–1986 fulfilling the DSM-III criteria for obsessive-compulsive disorder were reviewed for obsessive/compulsive symptoms. The symptoms were divided into form and content. The most common form of compulsion was rituals seen in 39 of the patients, and the most common compulsive content was washing. The most frequent obsessive content was thoughts about dirt and contamination followed by concern about death, illness and harm. The phenomenological feature of boys and girls was very similar, and only a few significant differences between boys and girls were found. One quarter of the boys and 12.5% of the girls had only obsession, whereas 27.0% of the boys and 37.5% of the girls had only compulsion and no obsession. The number of obsessive/compulsive symptoms was not found to correlate with the time spent each day on the symptom. In a pilot study of 72 psychiatric inpatients, relationships between state versus trait aspects of depression and perceived parental rearing have been investigated. It appeared that trait aspects (assessed by the mood scale of the Giessen test) yielded the most frequent and highest correlations with the factors rejection, emotional warmth and overprotection of the EMBU (Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran – My Memories of Upbringing) questionnaire of parental rearing. 70 subjects aged over 65 were evaluated within 48 h of admission in order to ascertain the correlation between manic and depressive symptoms and cognitive disorder, multi-infarct changes, abnormal movements, and extrapyramidal signs. Manic symptoms were found to be more often correlated with multi-infarct changes, lower cognitive scores, disordered behaviour, and bad outcome. The meaning of these findings is discussed.

In the present paper Kernberg’s hypothesis concerning the connection between primary process thinking on the one hand and primitive defense mechanisms and modes of object relationships on the other hand were tested empirically in a sample of 30 hospitalized borderline and 30 hospitalized neurotic patients. The diagnoses of the patients were given according to the ‘Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines’ of Gunderson and Kolb, the functions mentioned above were assessed on the basis of the Holtzman Inkblot Technique applying scoring systems of Lerner and coworkers for primitive defense mechanisms and of Urist for the scoring of object relationships to the Holtzman Inkblot Technique. According to the results the hypothesis derived from assumptions of Kernberg could be corroborated. A case of musical hallucinations in a young non-psychotic female is described. The only presented symptoms were perceptual disturbances accompanied by the fear of having a severe mental disorder. Further investigation disclosed a perforated ear-drum, with subsequent mild hearing deficit but no signs of major psychopathology. It is suggested that a psychiatric diagnosis should be deferred in such patients, before audible deficits had been ruled out. The clinical features of musical hallucinations associated with hearing deficits are discussed.

A case of Koro is described in a Malaysian Chinese man in the setting of marital dysharmony and sexual rejection. A distinction is suggested between the epidemic form of Koro and the Koro symptom occurring sporadically. Existence of the sporadic Koro syndrome is discussed and a unified classificatory system is proposed.
