摘要:
Abstract In the first part of the study behaviour of nine mothers with mental handicap towards their children was compared to that of a contrast group toward their children. Praising and labelling rates by the mothers with mental handicap were less than those for the contrast mothers while there was little verbal and no physical punishment by either group. In the second part of the study following a multiple baseline procedure the mothers with mental handicap were sequentially trained to praise and to engage in positive physical behaviour; to label and to ask questions and to model activities. While there are few data points, praise and labelling as well as the other targeted behaviours increased after training for most mothers with mental handicap. However, several mothers learned slowly and lost their gains after a month's follow‐up. These mothers were characterised as having problems in addition to their mental handicap that would interfere in their optimal learning of stimulating parenting skills. The implications of these results are discus

摘要:
Abstract The impact of a new community based service (NIMROD) on generic service contact was assessed for people living in different residential settings: supported accommodation in ordinary housing; mental handicap hospitals, and private family homes.1Results over five years indicated considerable variability in patterns of generic service usage and provided evidence of a limited impact of NIMROD on the frequency and type of services used. While receipt of NIMROD may have effected an increase in service usage for some people living in family homes, findings also indicated an opposite effect for those who moved into supported accommodation. Doctors and dentists were used by a consistently high proportion of people over time. The most marked change in service usage during the study was an increase in the use of chiropody services by hospital residents. The central role played by General Practitioners in community based care is discussed and the importance of examining client need in conjunction with extent of service usage is highlighte

摘要:
Abstract Recent developments in epidemiological and applied behavioural research and practice are reviewed. Three key themes in applied behavioural approaches are identified and discussed: an increasing tendency to base interventions upon prior experimental analyses; the use of communication as a metaphor in understanding the function of self‐injurious behaviour; a questioning of the social validity of aversive interventi

摘要:
Abstract Thirty Social Services care staff, working in small group homes with people with mental handicaps, completed a questionnaire concerning their working conditions and their attitudes on work and training opportunities. It was found that most staff reported considerable job satisfaction as well as some job stress. Overall scores of satisfaction and stress were more extreme than when the various job components were rated separately. Two areas of work associated with high job satisfaction (teaching clients and outings with clients) also produced the highest stress ratings. Staff turnover was relatively low. The results are discussed in relation to the unique job demands of community care wor

摘要:
Abstract This paper critically reviews the literature related to outcome research, staff training and management goal planning, primarily for adults with a mental handicap. The outcome literature indicates highly varying outcomes associated with goal planning to increase skills acquisition. No experimental studies were identified which attempted to evaluate goal planning procedures to increase the diversity of opportunities and change people's lifestyle. The quality of this outcome literature was rather disappointing. There were few studies which included control groups, placebo conditions, comparison intervention procedures, social validation or follow‐up data. Staff training in goal planning has received considerable attention. However, many studies have focussed only on staff keeping documentation rather than on staff teaching skills. Staff training methods which include anin vivotraining component and a planned maintenance procedure show considerable promise. Areas for the future development of goal planning are discus
