摘要:
AbstractThis paper reports the results of the second part of the largest UK incidence survey to date of the sexual abuse of adults with learning disabilities. A mandate was sought from the relevant statutory agencies and a standard questionnaire filled in by service managers or practitioners for each case/incident reported which fitted the definitions and parameters of the survey. The results confirm the pattern of abuse which emerged from the earlier study, i.e. that both women and men are at risk, that perpetrators are predominantly men and usually known rather than strangers. One important difference was a significant increase in the proportion of cases, of abuse of men with learning disabilities reported. Despite the increase in awareness and sources of information about adult abuse, service agencies have not developed coordinated systems for reporting or recording instances of sexual abuse. Data collection continues to be patchy andad hoc. Thelevelof reporting has not changed but there is some evidence that people who had been victimised received more appropriate help. Devolution of services within a new mixed market of care requires that additional safeguards are put in place to protect vulnerable adults.

摘要:
AbstractWe believe that we are living through an age of transition, perhaps moving towards some ‘post technological’ era and that this time is marked by considerable turbulence in society. Because of die place of disability within our society this era contains more dian its fair share of risks to people with disabilities. Our enduring concern is about the ability of human service organisations to deliver meaningful services—to become or to remain compassionate, humane and responsive to people's needs and, in particular, to devise strategies in which research and action are closely linked. In this study we advocate a participatory research paradigm as a powerful and liberating strategy to deliver meaningful services to people with disabilities. Through the participatory process the sharing of client experiences benefits both the clients (by turning their passivity into activity) and those who deliver services to them. It is a major thesis of this paper that a new research paradigm in the field of learning disability must emerge from a clearer comprehension of the essential identity of people with a learning disability and the reality of their life experiences and situa

摘要:
AbstractAn English translation of the 1956 paper in which Prader, Labhart and Willi originally described the syndrome which now bears their name is followed by a discussion of the advances in understanding regarding genetic and behavioural aspects which have occurred during the intervening years.Prader‐Willi syndrome is associated with an absence of a paternal contribution to a defined area of the long arm of chromosome 15, and with maladaptive behaviours which are more common than among people of the same age and sex, who have equivalent cognitive impairments. The syndrome is associated with an excessive appetite which may lead to the consumption of unusual items (such as frozen or discarded food) and to extreme obesity. The association between genetic and behavioural abnormalities offers an opportunity to explore the mediating effect of environmental variables on specific maladaptive behaviour

摘要:
AbstractThe drinking pattern occurring amongst people with learning difficulties in Dundee was investigated. The main conclusions are that fewer individuals actually reported drinking alcohol and fewer weekly units were consumed, than is found in the general population. A need for general alcohol education was identified since only one‐third of the sample appreciated the potential dangers associated with alcohol and none knew, specifically, what these dangers might b

摘要:
AbstractAs people with an intellectual disability are resettled from institutions, the likelihood increases that physiotherapists working in outpatient departments will have patients who have an intellectual disability. This study, therefore, sought to establish from a sample of 88 outpatient physiotherapists the degree of their knowledge of the All Wales Strategy for the Development of Services for the Mentally Handicapped, die adequacy of their experience and knowledge to treat this particular client group effectively and their attitudes towards people with intellectual disabilities. Although physiotherapists were generally aware of the principles of the AWS, 88% did not know its specific objectives. They had very little experience and knowledge of intellectual disability, 77% believing themselves inexperienced. Nevertheless, a large majority held positive attitudes towards this client group and agreed in principle with integration into the community. Training with respect to people who exhibit challenging behaviour was identified as necessary.
