摘要:
All that we really know of ourselves and our world is the past; and all that we really know of the past is that part which has survived in the form of material objects. Only a small fraction of our history is recorded in literature, and literature is subject to the errors of human interpretation. Only the material specimens of human and natural history are indisputable; they are the raw materials of history, the undeniable facts, the truth about our past. Conservation is the means by which we preserve them. It is an act of faith in the future.

摘要:
Museum interviewed Bernard M. Feilden and Giovanni Scichilone, asking some basic questions about the museum and conservation and stimulating a dialogue between the two. What can an archaeologist and museum curator learn from an architect just ending a four‐year tenure as Director of ICCROM, and vice versa? Some of their combined insights may surprise readers. Their conclusions will, we hope, give a clearer picture of all the needs that have to be considered in making a truly conservation‐worthy mus

摘要:
When Museum invited Ian Christie Clark, Secretary‐General of the National Museums of Canada, to provide a dialogue between a conservator and a decision‐maker, little did we expect to reap so rich a harvest. Not only did Mr Clark expose himself to the sallies of a determined conservator but he also lifted the problem out of the individual museum and to the plane of national policy and management concerning the Canadian heritage as a whole, movable and immoovable, cultural and natural. Firmly rooted in Canadian realities, this frank ‘dialogue’ contains examples that probably could come from museums or national museum directorates anywhere. Of course, many of the solutions proposed are dependent on a level of resources that conservators in most other countries can hardly hope to obtain. Yet many of the lessons and insights described below will, we hope, prove to be universally r

摘要:
The need for discussing the curator's responsibility for the preservation and storage of museum objects is almost invariably questioned. In November 1980, for example, when the All‐India Museums Conference devoted to the theme ‘Curatorial Responsibilities for the Preservation and Storage of Museum Objects’ was being organized at Lucknow by the Museums Association of India, it was asked why this subject had been chosen. Since it was recognized by everyone that preservation was a fundamental responsibility of a museum and that the principles involved were clear and simple, why once again remind the curator of his duty? My simple answer was based on what the critical visitor will actually see in museums in India and indeed the whole of

摘要:
Museumhad invited the late Mr Y. O. Dawodu, Principal of the Jos Centre for Museum Studies, to contribute to this issue, but by the time our request reached Jos, he had met with a fatal accident in Lagos (19 March 1981). As head of the principal museum training centre in Africa (known earlier as the Regional Training Centre for the Preservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage), established in 1963 under the joint aegis of Unesco and the United Nations Development Programme, Mr Dawodu would have been able to address himself with authority to the problems raised here. In 1978, however, he had already prepared a significant paper for the Second International Restorer Seminar, held at Veszprém, Hungary. The following text is based on that communication. It is published as a tribute to the memory of a pioneer of conservation and conservation training in Africa
