摘要:
The augmentating-reducing response in visual evoked potentials (VEP) has been shown to be a useful tool in psychiatric research. A series of studies has been devoted to the search for the biochemical basis of this phenomenon. An augmenter response in VEP is shown to be clearly related to low levels of endorphins, 5-HIAA and homovanillic acid in CSF and to low serum-dopamine-β-hydroxylase activity, while no significant relationship was found with 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylethylene glycol or tryptophan in CSF or MAO in thrombocytes. The results indicate that an augmenter response in VEP is related to low activity in the serotoninergic, dopaminergic and endophinergic pathways in CNS

Serum cholesterol levels were measured in 101 young male psychiatric inpatients with nonpsychotic disorders. When the patients were divided into those with antisocial personality, with alcoholism, with drug abuse and with other disorders, there was no overall difference in cholesterol level by group. Specifically there was no significant difference between the 24 patients whose primary diagnosis was antisocial personality and the 43 who had other personality disorders, neuroses or adjustment reactions. The data did not support an earlier report that lower serum cholesterol levels were characteristic of men with antisocial personality.

摘要:
The steady-state values in rats after a second 14-day period of daily subcutaneous administration of imipramine were the same as during the first period; liver demethylation activity rose for up to 3 days and then returned to normal. The imipramine-binding capacity of the serum, brain myelin, synaptosomes and mitochondria did not alter after repeated administration, but a decrease was found in the red blood cells. Stress (an electric current or immobilization) led to marked reduction of the plasma imipramine level, with a simultaneous increase in liver demethylase activity. Adrenalectomy caused a drop in demethylase activity; stress had no effect either on these values or on imipramine levels.

Administration of 50 mg trazodone, an antidepressant drug, in a single oral dose to 10 normal subjects of both sexes, aged 24–41, resulted in a significant (p < 0.01) decrease of serum prolactin (PRL) values. 摘要:
We studied segregation and linkage in a large kindred of unipolar depression. We subtyped the kindred on the basis of best fit to a single gene model and found that the cluster of ‘definite and probable depression, alcoholism, and drug dependency’ gave the best fit. Since this is essentially the definition of depression spectrum disease (DSD), this was considered to be a DSD kindred. Using this definition of ‘affected’ the genetic model provided a better fit to the data than the environmental model, although the difference was not statistically significant. A linkage analysis using 30 genetic markers did not suggest linkage at any of the loci tested. Finally, there was no evidence for an association between DSD and any of the 30 genetic
