Sound spectrographic analysis of recordings of vocalizations of red colobus, Colobus badius, made on two brief visits to the Kibale Forest, Uganda, reveals a graded sound system as described by Hill and Booth [1957]. Within 300 calls analyzed, three categories of sounds were discerned (fig. 1–3), all connected by intermediate forms (fig. 4 and 5). The extensive grading of the sounds contrasts with vocalizations of Colobus guereza and C. polykomos most of which are discrete rather than graded. This difference may be attributable to emphasis on vocal communication between troops in the black and white colobus and emphasis on intra-troop communication in the larger groups of the red colobu

The Nilgiri langur communication network is less varied than communication systems reported for terrestrial species. Most of the communicatory signals are witnessed in intratroop situations. Nilgiri langurs produce nineteen distinct vocalizations, the most notable being an intertroop territorial, spacing call. A complete description of the communicatory network is presented and compared specifically with other colobids, and nonhuman primates generally.

Sleep is not a unique entity but can be divided into 2 separate states called REM (rapid eye movement) and non-REM sleep stages. The present study describes REM sleep in the unrestrained chimpanzee and compares the first REM period which occurs during the night with the last REM period. The last REM period is longer, has more eye movements, more body movements, and possibly a different type of posture than early REM periods. These differences suggest that REM sleep, as is already known for nonREM sleep, changes during the course of the night.

A twin pregnancy in a primigravid Bornean orang-utan in captivity ended successfully. Examinations of the placentas and the karyotypes (peripheral blood) of the neonates failed to establish an etiology for a disparity in their weights.

Standard hematological techniques were used to determine total erythrocyte counts, total leukocyte counts, hemoglobin concentrations, packed cell volumes, differential counts and cell diameters for prosimians maintained at the Duke University Primate Facility. Several species and subspecies of the genera Galago, Lemur, and Propithecus were examined. The hematological parameters of the prosimians were compared with those of man. Prosimian primates have higher hemoglobin concentrations and higher total erythrocyte counts than man, and the diameters of the prosimian erythrocytes are smaller than the diameters of human erythrocytes. The leukocyte counts of prosimians are higher than those of man. Among prosimians, the ratio of lymphocytes to neutrophils is greater than one, whereas in man the ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes is greater than one.

Haptoglobin and red cell acid phosphatase phenotypes of Galago crassicaudatus crassicaudatus and G. c. argentatus were determined by starch-gel electrophoresis. In samples of plasma from 55 animals, a single haptoglobin phenotype, with a pattern similar to human Hp 1–1, was found. In red cell hemolysates of 55 animals, three different acid phosphatase phenotypes were distinguished. It is probable that red cell acid phosphatases of G. crassicaudatus are the products of non-dominant autosomal alleles. Twenty-two samples of milk from talapoin monkeys were analysed for their total lipid, protein, carbohydrate, and ash contents. The component fatty acids, amino acids, and major minerals were also measured in many of the samples. Talapoin monkey milk was very similar to milk from other primates, especially other Old-World monkeys. Some factors affecting the milk composition were also determined.
