摘要:
This article is a personal reflection on a long career in cardiovascular nursing. The author focuses on some of the lessons learned and on individuals pivotal to her learning. Major lessons relate to managing stress by maintaining a sense of perspective in the face of minor frustrations, creating significance from seemingly insignificant interactions and situations, and making career decisions that are based on personal as well as monetary rewards. She also discusses the satisfaction of developing expertise in a health care specialty and the importance of finding clinical mentors. Finally, she reflects on the challenges and rewards of teaching.

摘要:
Throughout history, master weavers have described the weaving of a tapestry as a calling, as transformation, as healing, or as a sacred work. The early, single threads of my tapestry have taken on new meaning over time as I have become clearer in mind and spirit about my mission of bringing holism and healing to the forefront of nursing. This article reveals some of the threads dominant patterns, and pearls that have been woven into my tapestry of holism.

摘要:
The powerful relationship between a teacher and student of nursing is described through stories that illustrate three lessons: (1) Caring gets results, (2) family comes first, and (3) passionate commitment is contagious. These are the lessons I learned from my mentor, Dr Cathie Guzzetta. Textbooks can tell part of a story, but the "dance for two" between a special teacher and a student can change perspectives and lives forever.

摘要:
Several themes emerged as I reviewed my career and development as a leader in cardiovascular nursing. An inherent part of my personality is to analyze situations, identify needed action, and figure out appropriate solutions. I recognized that gaining expert knowledge, wise mentors, and constructive critique were essential if I was to develop the skill to make meaningful contributions. My greatest role satisfaction comes from facilitating the intersection of nursing with other disciplines and coaching and mentoring others. Volunteering in the American Heart Association has provided me with many opportunities, an extensive network and invaluable friendships.
