Three of our own and 38 previously reported cases of cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita (CMTC) are reviewed. Light and electronmicroscopic studies revealed atypical capillaries, venules, and veins in different cutaneous layers. Clinically, the lesions aremanifested as telangiectasis, capillary hemangioma, cutis marmorata, venous hemangioma and varicose veins, depending on the type of vessels involved and the layer of skin affected. Secondary thrombosis with subsequent localized atrophy and ulceration occurs in a substantial number of cases. In at least 50% of cases there are associated findings. Hypoplasia or hyperplasia of „affected” or of „unaffected” organs is the most common association. Overwhelming sporadic occurrence, female reponderance, occasional minor manifestations in close relatives and considerable clinical variability suggest a multi‐factorial etiolog

Electron microscopic observation of the so‐called granuloma glutaeale infantum revealed that the granulomatous lesion was composed of neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, plasma cells, mast cells, histocytes, giant cells, and newly‐formed microvasculatures. This is a transmission and scanning electron microscopic study of stratum cerneum in psoriasis vulgaris.In transmission electron microscopy numerous granules and vacuoles are observed. They display the same variations in size and shape and the same arrangement and distribution in the cytoplasm. They are also observed in the intercellular space. Both single and confluent granules and vacuoles occur. The granules contain either a rather opaque homogeneous or heterogeneous substance. Usually the vacuoles appear to be electron‐optically empty, but many vacuoles containing substances similar to those in the granules are also found. The cell surfaces may be smooth, or they may show areas with numerous single excavations and excavations in rows, areas with distinct cytoplasmic protrusions and areas with a more regularly wavy shape.In scanning electron microscopy the cell surfaces may be predominantly smooth; they may display pores and areas with villi. Well‐developed and low villi occur.In this paper it is suggested that the excavations along the cell surfaces are the result of an excretion of single and confluent granules and vacuoles into the intercellular space. and that the excavations may correspond to the pores and the distinct eytoplasmic protrusions to the well‐developed

The composition of the mineralized matrix of the calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe (pilomatrixoma) and the process of mineralization have been investigated in two different tumors, one largely calcified and the other only slightly calcified. Fractionation of the tissue has been performed by isopycnic centrifugation. Whatever the mineral content of the fractions, their matrix is composed of a small proportion of collagen and a large proportion of keratin. The amino acid composition of this keratin is closer to that of nail than of hair. The hydroxylapatite crystals are associated with the keratin and the process of mineralization is accompanied by a progressive reduction in this polypeptide matrix. The chemical composition of this keratin, the known examples of calcification of hard keratin and the analogy of the ultrastructural pathways in the keratinization of pilomatrixoma and nails, suggest that the pilomatrixoma arises from the differentiation of ectopic ectodermal cells under the influence of an inducing system similar to that of nail.

This paper describes the sequence of microscopic events associated with the development in guinea pigs of an infection induced by inoculation of intact skin withStreptococcus zooepidemicus. A striking similarity of this infection to human impetigo was noted.

This review shows that useful information about immunological mechanisms of pathogenesis can be obtained from observations of human skin and appropriate animal models. Although the immunological mechanisms in skin and mucous membranes are becoming better known, much research remains to be done.
