In 33 of 112 seborrheic keratoses reviewed histologically, a keratinization process was observed, which was identical with or showed marked similarity to, trichilemmal keratinization (TK). This type of keratinization took place more frequently in lesions which were pruritic and in those located on the extremities. Histologically, the change was observed in the bottoms of pseudocysts and crypts, in areas showing evidence of inflammation, such as exocytosis, spongiosis and squamous eddy or whorl formation. No relationship was found between the presence of TK or TK‐like keratinization and the various histologic types of seborrheic keratoses. A method for the measurement of collagen fibre diameter in human skin is described. Photographic reduction of electron micrograph negatives onto positive transparency film allows the use of a Quantimet 720 image analysis system for relatively rapid determination of mean collagen fibre diameter based upon the mean cross‐sectional area of a single electron microscope field. Immunostaining for β‐2‐microglobulin (β‐2m) was performed on various benign and malignant adnexal skin tumors and 3 cases of metastasizing basocellular carcinomas. All the tumors and their metastases, with the exception of 2 basocellular carcinomas gave evidence of β‐2m. Most tumors contained both stained and unstained cells. The stained cells showed differentiation, the unstained ones appeared to be undifferentiated and basal‐like in character. The staining of cutaneous tumors for β‐2m may offer a tool for investigating tumor differentiation, but seems not to be of much value in distinguishing malignant from

A clinicopathologic study of 18 eccrine acrospiromas with atypical nuclear changes is presented. The changes included nuclear pleomorphism, prominent nucleoli, chromatin condensation, multinucleate giant cells and increased mitotic activity. Of the 5 neoplasms that recurred, 2 recurred once and were histologically and clinically benign, and the other 2 recurrences were histologically malignant. One neoplasm recurred twice, the first recurrence being histologically benign and the second histologically malignant. It is suggested that such nuclear atypias in otherwise clinically and histologically benign eccrine acrospiromas may be associated with local benign recurrences some of which may undergo malignant change. Electron microscopy of psoriatic skin prior to and after local hyperthermia revealed both temporary and gradual changes following treatment. The former occurred almost simultaneously with initiation of hyperthermia, and were characterized by an intracellular edema, the aggregation of tonofibrils in the basal half of the epidermis and an amorphous substance in the epidermal interspaces. The latter occurred during the course of treatment and were represented by narrowing of the intercellular spaces, a decrease in the number of mitochondria and free ribosomes, and an increased number of desmosomes and tonofibrils, with a consequent increase of keratohyaline granules. No such abnormal cells and structures were found in this study, as were observed in PUVA therapy.

The proliferating skin cells in a case of acute disseminated histiocytosis‐X (Abt‐Letterer‐Siwe disease) confirmed by electron microscopy, were characterized by a panel of monoclonal antibodies using an immunoperoxidase technique.
