摘要:
Prepared at the request of the AAPT Editorial Board for Resource Letters. This is a supplement to one of a series of Resource Letters on different topics intended to guide college physicists, astronomers, and other scientists to some of the literature and other teaching aids that may help improve course contents in specified fields. No Resource Letter is meant to be exhaustive and complete; in time there may be more than one letter or supplement on some of the main subjects of interest. Comments on these materials as well as suggestions for future topics will be welcomed. Please send such communications to Professor Arthur R. Quinton, Editor, Resource Letter Board, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Massachusetts 01002.Reprints: When ordering, request Resource Letter TLA−2, enclose 50 cents per copy (not in stamps) together with a stamped and self−addressed envelope to Arnold A. Strassenburg, Executive Officer, American Association of Physics Teachers, Drawer AW, Stony Brook, New York 11790.

摘要:
An interdisciplinary (ID) course based on science fiction is described. The course was developed by a four−man team consisting of a physicist, a poet, a psychologist, and a literary scholar. A unique feature of the course is that all of the teaching team meet every class. Objectives, structure and development of the course are discussed with particular emphasis on the ID approach, and a typical syllabus for one book is described in detail. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the course are presented.

摘要:
We describe a novel interdisciplinary course in which history and physics are presented as examples of humanistic and scientific disciplines. The course is offered to college seniors majoring in a wide variety of fields and has three main purposes. First, it presents a historical picture of the development of the physical sciences in the larger context of Western intellectual history. Second, by developing physical ideas in a fairly rigorous fashion, it presents this vital branch of intellectual history without falling into the trap of teaching the non−science students the history of something they do not understand. Third, it presents a historical−philosophical perspective of the development of the ’’scientific method.’’ We have devised a means of presentation which is simultaneously of value to science majors and non−science majors alike, and which encourages them to take a new and much less extreme view of the ’’two−cultures’’ gap. We describe experiments now in progress aimed at extending the technique to the high−school level, in order to eradicate the ’’two−cultures’’ gap at the crucial point in its formation.

摘要:
An engineering physics course, in which the Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) technique has been used, has been designed to meet the requirements that all of a prescribed list of subjects be covered and that the course be completed within a single semester. The course was modified so that it has two levels of mastery for each unit: a passing level and a complete mastery level. All students were required to reach a passing level of mastery on all of the required material. Grades were assigned according to the number of complete mastery level examinations passed. It was found that unit deadlines are necessary to insure completion of the material, but they do not hinder progress because only passing mastery is required by each deadline. Ninety−two percent of the students who have completed the course indicate a preference for this PSI technique over the regular lecture.

摘要:
The efficiency of a Carnot engine is treated for the case where the power output is limited by the rates of heat transfer to and from the working substance. It is shown that the efficiency, η, at maximum power output is given by the expression η = 1 − (T2/T1)1/2where T1and T2are the respective temperatures of the heat source and heat sink. It is also shown that the efficiency of existing engines is well described by the above result.

摘要:
Examples in one and two dimensions for motion in a uniform gravitational field are considered quantum mechanically. The examples of bouncing in one dimension and sliding down an incline are proposed for use as conceptual aids in an introductory course.

摘要:
It is shown how one may simply associate the problem of the isotropic oscillator to that of the hydrogenic atom in classical dynamics, particularly in its action−angle variable formulation, so that the solution of the one problem implies that of the other. This relationship persists in the two−dimensional quantum mechanics and provides the key to the construction of a wave pocket solution for the isotropic oscillator in the region of large principal quantum number in three dimensions.

摘要:
Textbooks rarely give time−domain solutions to antenna problems. For the case of a finite linear antenna along which a fixed current waveform propagates, we present analytical time−domain solutions for the electric and magnetic radiation (far) fields. We also give computer solutions for the total (near and far) fields. The current waveform used as an example in the computer calculations approximates that of a lightning return−stroke, a common geophysical example of the type of radiation source under consideration.

摘要:
Expressions for the relative rotation of coordinate systems resulting from translational Lorentz transformations are derived heuristically. Both the general case and useful first order (in v/c) approximation are treated. The exact results for circular motion and for uniform rectilinear velocity changes are given in practicable form.
