摘要:
A glass plate covered with an evaporated silver layer of about 200 Å thickness is irradiated by a line-shaped electron probe in a vacuum of10−4 Torr.A layer of polymerized hydrocarbon of very low electrical conductivity is formed at places subjected to high electron current density. An electrolytically deposited copper layer leaves these places free from copper. When the copper layer is peeled away a grating with slits free of any material is obtained. Slits 50 μ long and 0.3 μ wide with a grating spacing of 1 μ are obtained. The maximum number of slits is five. The electron diffraction pattern obtained using these slits in an arrangement analogous to Young's light interference experiment in the Fraunhofer region shows effects corresponding to the well-known interference phenomena in light optics.

摘要:
It is argued that the contrast between “fundamentalists” and “bootstrappers” in high-energy physics reflects the contrast between Western and Eastern philosophy. Most physicists are reluctant to accept the bootstrap model because the fundamentalist thinking is intimately connected with their cultural and philosophical background. A comparison of the general philosophy and of the more detailed features of the model with the concepts of Mahayana Buddhism reveals striking similarities.

摘要:
Monte Carlo methods have become well-established research tools during the past three decades. With the increasing availability of computers it is now possible to encourage a wider audience to learn about these powerful methods. This review aims to arouse interest in the Monte Carlo approach to problem solving.

摘要:
A description is given of an introductory biophysics PSI (Personalized System of Instruction) course which utilizes tutors selected from the students themselves (bootstrap tutors). In the author's opinion such tutors, while obviously easier to obtain, are as good as or better than tutors selected from a previous class.

摘要:
The use of a computer in undergraduate physics courses opens the door to a large number of instructive problems which were once precluded due to the necessity of numerical analysis. One such example for elementary quantum mechanics is the problem of a bound system of more than two particles which may be solved by the method of the self-consistent field (SCF). This paper discusses one-dimensional systems of particles whose solutions are obtained by the SCF method using the Hartree approximation. The procedure is shown to be a simple extension of programs which many undergraduates already use to obtain computer solutions of the Schrödinger equation in one dimention. Calculations for these systems serve as a useful introduction to iterative techniques, and the results provide the student with insight into the nature of atomic calculations for multi-electron atoms.

摘要:
The problem of the behavior of a pulse when propagating through a dispersive medium has been treated in terms of Fourier transforms. For a linearly dispersive medium the evaluation of the integrals is trivial, but when the dispersion relation contains a significant quadratic term the integrals can be evaluated using the properties of Fresnel integrals. The advantage of this treatment is that it shows that there is a very strong analogy between the pulse shape and the diffraction pattern produced when light passes through a small hole in an opaque screen.

摘要:
This article deals with a number of errors which are commonly to be found in the literature in the context of the solution of the harmonic oscillator problem by means of the polynomial method. Principally, wrong or misleading statements are often made about the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of the harmonic oscillator equation. The situation is here rectified by deriving certain rigorous inequalities by quite elementary means which maintain the spirit of the usual argument.

摘要:
In a purely classical context it is argued on the basis of considerations involving the grand canonical probability-in-phase that the internal consistency of the Gibbsianensemble formalism necessarily implies the presence of the factor1/N!in the canonical partition function.
