摘要:
Prepared at the request of the AAPT Committee on Resource Letters; supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. This is one of a series of Resource Letters on different topics, intended to guide college physicists to some of the literature and other teaching aids that may help them improve course contents in specified fields of physics. No Resource Letter is meant to be exhaustive and complete; in time there may be more than one letter on some of the main subjects of interest. Comments and suggestions concerning the content and arrangement of letters as well as suggestions for future topics will be welcomed. Please send such communications to Professor Arnold Arons, Chairman, Resource Letter Committee, Department of Physics, Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts.Notation:The letterEafter an item number indicateselementarylevel, useful principally for freshman liberal arts through sophomore physics courses; the letterIindicatesintermediate(junior, senior) level; and the letterAindicatesadvancedmaterial principally suited for senior, graduate study. An asterisk (*) indicates items particularly recommended for introductory study.Additional copies:Available from American Institute of Physics, 335 East 45 Street, New York, New York, 10017. When ordering, request Resource Letter ECAN-1 and enclose a return envelope.

摘要:
A small workshop conference was held to consider the development of some experiments in nuclear and particle physics for use in college and university instructional laboratories. Three groups of experiments are outlined: (1) experiments on energy loss of α particles in scintillation and surface-barrier detectors and on measurement of fission fragment energies; (2) γ-γ angular correlation measurements; and (3) muon decay and the use of spark chambers with lower energy particles.

摘要:
During the year 1966 there are major anniversaries of the birth or death of nine men whose accomplishments and influence have been of importance to the development of physics. They are: John Dalton, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, John Leslie, Dayton Clarence Miller, Lewis Morris Rutherfurd, Joseph Sauveur, Charles Mahon Stanhope, John Wallis, and William Hyde Wollaston. Brief accounts of their lives and achievements are given here.

摘要:
A freshman-level two-semester one-credit hour introductory course in contemporary physics has been developed which uses a selection of 25Scientific Americanoffprints as a text. The course was designed to maintain contact with potential department majors during the freshman year but has been widely used by liberal arts at all levels. Emphasis is placed on current research in physics. Some organizational details are discussed and a list of the offprints used is given.

摘要:
Two usual methods of proving the Law of Conservation of Angular Momentum lead to discrepant results. It is shown that the two methods deal with different definitions of angular momentum. When the definitions agree, the discrepancy disappears.

摘要:
The design, construction, and performance of a low-cost precision and high-resolution constant-velocity Mössbauer spectrometer, based on a micometer leadscrew drive, is described. Natural linewidth of 0.19 mm/sec has been obtained for the inner two lines of the six-line Fe-hyperfine spectrum.

摘要:
A noncalculus derivation of Newton's modification of Kepler's third law is given for two bodies of arbitrary masses revolving in elliptical orbits around their center of mass. Using this law and readily available astronomical data, an approximate value of the mass of the moon is calculated. At present, a precise determination of the moon's mass requires knowledge of the very small shifts of the earth from its mean orbit due to center of mass effects, although lunar probes will some day be useful for this purpose.

摘要:
An analytical solution is obtained by conformal mapping. The solution is used in a digital computer to provide precise numerical solutions. This process represents a saving in time and effort when compared with approximate numerical methods often used. Information on the density of flow lines is presented. The potential field is explored experimentally using a precision sheet of metal foil, and experiment and theory compared. The experimental arrangement could replace the standard water-tank experiment used in many undergraduate laboratories.

摘要:
The geodesic postulate in the form of a variational principle is derived directly from a surface integral relation which is a consequence of the coordinate invariance of the Hamilton action integral for the field equations.
