摘要:
Major discoveries, which have transformed The Periodic System of the Elements from the arrangement suggested by Mendeleev to the current configuration, are reviewed. In particular, the contributions of H. G. J. Moseley and G. T. Seaborg are described.

摘要:
Using second‐order, time‐dependent perturbation theory, we calculate the intermediate and final state amplitudes for transitions from an initial to a final state via an intermediate resonance. When our complex energies are replaced by real energies our results are identical to the real energy final state amplitudes obtained by other authors, thus justifying the usual phenomenological replacement of real energies with complex ones when considering resonance behavior. We then derive the Fermi Golden Rule No. 1 withcomplexenergies.

摘要:
It is pointed out that the vacuum may be regarded as a semiconductor. In particular, the vacuum in the region close to the nucleus of a superheavy element is analogous to the inversion layer in a field effect transistor. This discovery was made in an noncalculus undergraduate course in modern physics, which is briefly discussed.

摘要:
The generalized least‐squares problem, in which an observation vector satisfies a set of equations that may be nonlinear and implicit, and all components may be subject to errors, can be solved as a constrained minimization problem. When the analysis is specialized to the important case of one‐dimensional curve fitting to measurements where both variables contain errors, it becomes similar to the effective variance method. A standard least‐squares computer program can be used to apply the new method; the results are superior to these of the effective variance technique. A simple geometrical construction illustrates the principles of the new method.

摘要:
Various constitutive relations between the sources and electromagnetic fields in a dispersive medium at rest are reviewed. The constitutive relations which are considered lead to the traditional, the Lindhard, and the external‐dielectric tensor formulations of electrodynamics; also a formulation which is a generalization of all of these is developed. Finally, the fluid equations are employed in a calculation of the Lindhard dielectric tensor of a magnetized plasma.
