SYNOPSIS.A pure strain ofIsosporafelis derived from a single oocyst was used to study the endogenous cycle. One and a half to two‐month‐old laboratory‐reared, coccidia‐free kittens were used thruout the study. The endogenous stages occurred in the epithelial cells of the distal parts of the villi in the ileum and occasionally duodenum and jejunum. All stages lay above the host cell nucleus. There were 3 asexual generations. The 1st generation schizonts were 11–30 by 10–23 μ when mature and contained 16–17 banana‐shaped merozoites 11–15 by 3–5 μ. They became mature in 96 or sometimes in 120 hours. The 1st generation merozoites entered new host cells, rounded up and formed 2nd generation schizonts. These formed within themselves 2–10 or more spindle‐shaped bodies resembling 1st generation merozoites in shape and size. These were 2nd generation merozoites. They were uninucleate 120 hours after inoculation, but by 144 hours they became larger, multinucleate and some lost their elongate shape and became ovoid. They were then 3rd generation schizonts. They were 12–16 by 4–5 μ. Each formed up to 6 or more banana‐shaped merozoites 6–8 by 1–2 μ. The 3rd generation schizonts and merozoites developed within the same host cell and parasitophorous vacuole as the 2nd generation schizonts and merozoites. Mature schizonts containing only 3rd generation merozoites appeared 144 hours after inoculation, were most abundant 168 hours after inoculation, and might be present as late as 216 hours after inoculation. They were 14–36 by 13–22 μ and contained 36 to more than 70 merozoites.The 3rd generation merozoites entered the sexual cycle. The mature microgametocytes were 24–72 by 18–32 μ and contained a central residuum and a large number of microgametes 5–7 by 0.8 μ with 2 posteriorly‐directed flagella. The mature macrogametes were 16–22 by 8–13 μ. Gametogony occurred 144–216 hours after inoculation.The prepatent period was 168–192 hours and the patent period 10–11 days. Peak

SYNOPSIS.The action of pressure was studied on the incorporation of labelled phenylalanine and uridine, and on the synthesis of water‐soluble proteins in heat‐synchronizedTetrahymena pyriformis.Incorporation of [14C] phenylalanine and [3H] uridine into TCA insoluble fractions was markedly decreased in pressuretreatedTetrahymena.Moreover, the incorporation was dependent upon the age of the cells. SYNOPSIS.The numbers and kinds of testacea and ciliates were studied in the litters and soils of 23 sites, from temperate and subtropical coniferous and deciduous forests, and grasslands. In coniferous forests, testacea were 10 times or more abundant than ciliates, and numbered 10,000–24,000/g (wet weight) in litters and up to 8,000/g in soils. Ciliates numbered up to 1,500/g, but averaged less than 600/g in litters and less than 300/g in soils. Under deciduous vegetation, ciliates approached, equaled, or exceeded testacea, and numbered 1,000–5,000/g in litters, while remaining about the same in soils. Temperature and soil influence vegetation types, and their rates of litter decay affect the protozoa. Moisture favors numerical dominance of certain species. Among testacea, several species dominate in a particular habitat; among ciliates, the genusColpodadominates in almost all litter and soil habit

SYNOPSIS.Isospora papionisn. sp. is described from the chacma baboonPapio ursinis(Kerr, 1792). Histopathologic examination revealed 3 of 20 baboons to be infected, but no organisms were found on examination of the feces. Macrogametes and sporulated oocysts were observed in the small intestine, mainly in the jejunum and ileum, invariably in an epithelial or subepithelial location at the proximal portions of the crypts of Lieberkühn. Intact sporulated oocysts averaged 17 by 11 μ and had very thin walls which were often partially collapsed between the sporocysts. SYNOPSIS.The patterns of correlation among cortical structures have been examined in strains of 3 additional breeding groups (syngens) ofTetrahymena pyriformis.As in previous studies, many cytogeometric properties were found to vary within a syngen. Surprisingly, one strain of syngen 12 differed from 3 others in the one property previously found to be constant—the pattern of variation of the position of the contractile vacuole pores. This strain may, however, be a sexually cross‐reacting representative of still another syngen. This interpretation would preserve the diagnostic value of CVP position, and permit an ordering of syngens in terms of the distance of the CVP's from meridian #1: 1, 3, 7, 6, 8, 11, 12, 9, 2, 5, 4,

SYNOPSIS.Two species of amoebae identified asFlabellula citataSchaeffer, 1926, andF. calkinsi(Hogue, 1914) were isolated from saltwater habitats on the Maine coast. Both species showed the locomotive form and behavior of the genusFlabellulaemend. Bovee, 1965. Both showed a mitotic pattern distinct from that of the genusVannellaBovee, 1965, supporting Bovee's subdivision of Schaeffer's genusFlabellula.Preparations ofF. calkinsihad an unusually high proportion of cells with 2 or more nuclei.F. calkinsiis a voracious cannibal. NeitherF. citatanorF. calkinsiformed cysts in culture. Both species could be cultivated on media made with highly dilute sea water, but neither survived in a medium equivalent to a freshwater medium.

SYNOPSIS.An enzyme inhibition technic was employed for quantitative comparison of the serologic properties of glucokinases from 4 groups of amebas which are structurally indistinguishable species:Entamoeba histolytica, E. moshkovskii, E. invadensandE. terrapinae.Antiglucokinase was prepared by immunizing rabbits with crude extracts of DKB and Laredo strains ofE. histolytica.The combination of amebal glucokinase and homologous antibody was a pseudoirreversible reaction. The inhibition was proportional to the amount of antibody until at least 60% of the enzyme was inhibited, and the inhibition was 96–92% in the region of antibody excess. The nature of the inhibition was uncompetitive with respect to substrate. The presence of substrate had no effect upon the inhibition. Anti‐DKB glucokinase inhibited equally glucokinases from DKB, JH, K9, 200, NRS, BH, JI, F22, and N strains. Anti‐Laredo glucokinase equally inhibited glucokinases from Laredo, Huff, JA, AG, and 403 strains; 2.5–2.9 times as much antiserum was required to produce the same degree of inhibition between antisera and strains of heterologous group as with homologous antigen. Anti‐DKB and anti‐Laredo glucokinases cross‐reacted with the enzyme fromE. moshkovskii, but not with enzymes from reptilian amebas.
