摘要:
SYNOPSISOur knowledge of parasitic protozoa can be greatly enhanced by increased use of the following 3 ecological approaches to the study of parasitism. A) Studies of energy flow between parasite and host. B) Systems analysis. C) Studies of nutrition through an analysis of the parasite's environment. Most of the energy in cysts and spores is never returned to the parasite‐host system. The more integrated the system the more difficult an analysis of the role of parasites in the host energy budget. A parasite‐host system can be understood only through a careful study of each part, and the relationships among these parts. A measure of the nutrient status of a body fluid should take into consideration the nutrient status of any population of parasites that may be residing in that fluid. The above considerations were applied to problems of parasitism in deepsea fishes. Small, delicate midwater fishes do not have much energy for pursuing prey. We need to know details of the effects of great pressures and low temperatures on parasites. Energy flow between parasites and deep marine fishes has never been investigated. It is possible that parasites in these fishes are more efficient in energy transformation than are their hosts. These kinds of studies may be labeled “integrative parasito

摘要:
SYNOPSISThe insectivorous bugZelus leucogrammus(Perty, 1834) (Hemiptera, Reduviidae) was found to harbor several species of trypanosomatids of the generaLeptomonas, Crithidia, HerpetomonasandBlastocrithidia. However, laboratory bred nymphs given sterile food were infected only byBlastocrithidia, the other flagellates appearing in their intestinal tract when they were fed on other insects.TheBlastocrithidiawas thought to belong to a single species and to be a parasite proper ofZ. leucogrammus(and possibly other Hemiptera), producing luxuriant infections in the intestinal tract of the bugs captured in nature and spreading easily among isolated populations through cannibalism and ingestion of cysts; it was also abundant in the genital tract of gravid females but transovarian transmission was not proved. ThisBlastocrithidiaexperimentally infectedTriatoma infestansand is very close toB. triatomaeCerisola, del Prado, Rohwedder and Bozzini, 1971.The other trypanosomatids, never numerous in naturally infectedZ. leucogrammus, are acquired by the bug from many different insects, chiefly Diptera, on which it was seen to feed.Herpetomonas muscarumandC. luciliae, the common trypanosomatids among several muscoid Diptera, were isolated both from flies and from the bugs fed on them.

摘要:
SYNOPSISTwo of 15 road‐killed opossums examined for coccidia were found to be infected with a hitherto undescribed species ofEimeria, herein namedEimeria indianensis. The oocysts were spherical (63%) or slightly subspherical (37%) with a double‐layered wall. The outer layer was ∼1.5 μm thick, yellowish, striated, and appeared rough and pitted on the surface. A micropyle was absent. The spherical oocysts were 16.3 (13–18) μm in diameter; the subspherical ones, 17.6 (15–18) × 16.4 (14–17) μm. The sporocysts measured 9.1 (8–10) × 6.2 (6–7) μm and contained a granular residuum. The sporozoites were elongate, measuring 13.4 (13–15) × 1.8 (1.6‐2.0) μm; no refractile globules were seen. The prepatent period was 10 days and the patent period ranged from 9–15 days.A few oocysts of anIsosporasp. were present in one opossum. It was not possible to confirm whether they were specifically of the

摘要:
SYNOPSISIn a survey of microsporidian parasites of trematode larvae of Malaysian fresh‐water snails, species of Nose‐matidae were found 7 times in rediae from 425Lymnaea rubiginosa, 6 times in rediae from 97Indoplanorbis exustusand not at all in other snails. There were 3 species of Microsporida in all: one, found inEchinoparyphium dunni, Echinostoma hystricosumandEchinostoma malayanumwas identified asNosema eurytremaeCanning; another, which was found inE. dunniandEchinostoma audyi, had paired nuclei (diplokaryon form) in sporogony only and was named a new species,Nosema vasicolasp.n.; the 3rd, fromE. hystricosum, lacked diplokaryon nuclei throughout development, was considered to belong to a new genus and was namedUnikaryon piriformisgen.n., sp.n.Nosema eurytremaewas transmitted experimentally toFasciola hepaticarediae inLymnaea truncat

摘要:
SYNOPSISTotal numbers, generic distribution and percentage species distribution were determined for the ciliate protozoa in rumen contents obtained from Alaskan moose (Alces americana), musk‐ox(Ovibos moschatus)and Dall mountain sheep(Ovis dalli). The musk‐ox has a fauna somewhat similar to that previously observed in reindeer and caribou. In contrast, only protozoa in the genusEntodiniumwere observed in moose, while Dall mountain sheep have a fauna unique among Alaskan ruminants studied to date. Other thanEntodinium exiguumwhich was common to all animals, only 2 additional species ofEntodinium, observed in the moose and musk‐ox, occurred in more than one animal species. Four new species of protozoa are described,Entodinium dallisp.n.,Entodinium constrictumsp.n. andPolyplastron alaskumsp.n. from the Dall mountain sheep andEntodinium alcessp.n. from
