SUMMARY.The author proposes a new systematic division of the suborder Schizogregarina on the basis of the comparative morphology of the different stages of the life‐cycle of the different genera. SUMMARY.We have been investigating asexual and sexual stages in the life cycle of a ciliated protozoan,Vorticella microstoma, with the object of determining characteristic patterns at the biochemical level. In the course of our studies we have made progress in the chromatographic analysis of acid hydrolysates of the asexual (neuter) and the sexual forms. Our findings demonstrate that it is possible to obtain from the neuter stages ninhydrin‐positive patterns which are characteristically different from the patterns derived from the sexual stage. These patterns are believed to be indicative of the biochemical peculiarities of the organisms. Ninhydrin‐positive patterns of the sexual stages ofVorticella microstomaare composed of 15 bands, in contrast with 10 bands observed in the patterns of asexual stages. In regard to color, bands 1–10 in the neuters are similar to bands 1–10 in the sexuals. The difference between the two ninhydrin‐positive patterns is believed to be significant, in that it indicates the biochemical peculiarities of the respective kinds of Vorticellae. It is suggested that chromatographic analyses may lead to the identification of the substance or substances liberated by the macroconjugant for the purpose of attracting microconjugants. The methods which have been successfully used in this study may be helpful to investigators who utilize protozoa as experimental organisms. We believe the methods and results reported here may have applications in the genetics of protozoa and in biological studies devoted to metazoan

SUMMARY.Twelve carabao in the Philippines were found to be lightly infected with intestinal amoebae. Trophic forms (12 microns in diameter) of this protozoan possessed a definite ectoplasm and a homogeneous endoplasm. They were found only in stained preparations. The nucleus was similar to that of the cyst. All unconcentrated fecal smears contained at least a few cysts (8 microns in diameter). In these forms the cytoplasm usually contained a large vacuole and one or more irregular chromatoidal bodies. The nucleus (2.6 microns in diameter) possessed a pronounced, deeply staining, uniform peripheral ring and a large irregular endosome. There was no periendosomal ring. This amoeba is designated asEntamoeba bubalus, n.sp.

SUMMARY.A total of 1037 birds, belonging to 17 species of Fringillidae (order Passeres) and nearly all collected in or near Syracuse, N. Y., were examined for blood parasites. Of the species of avian malaria,Plasmodium cathemeriumoccurred most frequently, followed byP. hexamerium, P. relictum, P. elongatum, andP. circumflexum.Other species were not seen, although some (e.g.P. nucleophilum, P. polare, P. vaughani) are known to occur in Central New York.A number of song, chipping, and field sparrows were given experimental inoculations ofPlasmodium vaughani‐infected blood and liberated. A few were recaught at varying intervals, but none were infected, suggesting that these species are insusceptible to this type of avian malaria.Malaria in song sparrows, which were caught in large numbers, is common and probably endemic, not varying greatly in frequency from year to year. But the incidence shows a sharp peak in the spring, most cases apparently being low‐grade relapses, which probably serve to reestablish the infection in the new crop of mosquitoes. There are indications thatHaemoproteusandLeucocytozoonbehave similarly.Infection with these last two parasites occurred in most of the species examined, but the incidence varied greatly, being especially high in white‐throated and white‐crowned sparrows. SUMMARY.Schellackia occidentalisn. sp., is described from the following lizards from southern California:Sceloporus occidentalis becki, S. o. biseriatus, andUta stansburiana hesperis.Evidence is presented to show that lizards become infected by ingestion of the lizard miteGeckobiella texana.The mite acts as a passive vector by swallowing infected erythrocytes. After ingestion of the mites carrying parasitized red cells, the lizard is infected by migration of the sporozoites into the lizard's intestinal epithelial cells. Schizogony and sporogony occur in the intestinal wall of the lizard. Sporozoites appear in the peripheral blood from 30 to 45 days after ingestion of infected mites. This is the first species of the genusSchellackiato be described in the Western Hemisphere.
