摘要:
AbstractGuar gum, obtained from the seeds of Cyamopsis tetragonolobus (L.) Taub. (Leguminosae), and carob gum, obtained from the seeds ofCeratonia siliquaL. (Leguminosae), were investigated for their effect on body weight, blood glucose and insulin levels in rats fed on a diet containing 15% of guar or carob gums for 2 to 6 consecutive weeks. At the same time, cholesterol plasma levels were assayed. A decrease in both plasma glucose and IRI levels together with a decreased haematic cholesterol level were observed.

摘要:
AbstractBiochemical and physiological alterations have been observed in the genital tract of female cyclic rats treated with butanolic extract ofPueraria tuberosaDC. Its administration caused a significant increase in the glycogen contents, protein concentration, activity of acid and alkaline phosphatase and total cholesterol in the ovary, uterus, cervix and vagina. Further, in contrast to other organs vaginal glycogen decreased significantly. Its administration also stimulated the uterine structures, caused metaplastic changes in the cervical epithelium with marked keratinization and provoked considerable cornification in the vaginal epithelium. These changes have been correlated with anti‐implantation action of the butanolic extract in the light of its estrogenic activit

摘要:
AbstractThe water soluble fraction of an ethanolic extract fromDiodia scandenswas found to have no effect on the in vitro clotting time of normal human blood. However, it increased to 2.8 min the in vitro blood clotting time previously reduced from 4.7 min to 1.8 min following treatment withEchis carinatusvenom. The plant extract was shown to possess definite anti‐thromboplastin activity against brain thromboplastin and venom thromboplastin activity. The extract did not significantly inhibit the thrombin‐like activity of the venom. It is suggested that the antagonistic effect of the extract on venom‐induced coagulation is due to inhibition of thromboplastin/FactorVIIactivation of Fac

摘要:
AbstractPanaxan A did not affect the activities of hepatic glucokinase and hexokinase but decreased glucose‐6‐phosphatase activity. Although panaxan B did not influence the activities of these enzymes, it showed a tendency to reduce hepatic glycogen synthetase activity, and panaxans A and B elevated the phosphorylase activity. Panaxan B lowered the glycogen content in the liver. Panaxans A and B significantly increased the activities of glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase and phosphofructokinase in th

摘要:
AbstractPanaxan A did not affect plasma insulin levels and insulin sensitivity, whereas Panaxan B elevated the plasma insulin level and enhanced insulin sensitivityin vivo. When mice were treated with panaxan B, insulin secretion from pancreatic islets was potentiated, while direct addition of panaxan B to pancreatic islets from normal mice showed no enhancement of insulin secretionin vitro.Hypoglycemic activity of panaxan B was not inhibited by indomethacin. Panaxans A and B showed hypoglycemic activity in spontaneously diabetic mice. Insulin binding to isolated adipocytes obtained from panaxan B‐treated mice was significantly increased, while direct addition of panaxan B to isolated adipocytes from normal mice elicited no increase of insulin binding. It is concluded that a part of the hypoglycemic activity of panaxan B is due to increase of the plasma insulin level and enhancement of insulin sensitivity, while that of panaxan A is attributable to other mechanism

摘要:
AbstractToxicity studies were done on six plants used in the traditional Arab system of medicine, namely:Aloe vera, Ammi majus, Areca catachu, Citrullus colocynthis, Cuminum cyminumandZizyphus spina‐christi.During acute toxicity tests, observations were made for 24 h while the animals were treated for 3 months in chronic treatment. External morphological changes, visceral toxicity, haematological changes, and spermatogenic dysfunction, besides effects on average body weight and vital organ weight, were recorded. In the acute toxicity test,C. colocynthisshowed a dose dependent toxic effect. On chronic treatment, per cent lethality was found to be significant inA. catachu, A. veraandC. colocynthistreated groups where haematological changes were also observed. The spermatogenic dysfunction was significant in A. vera andC. colocynthistreated animals.C. cyminumandZ. spina‐christion the other hand, reduced sperm abnormalit

摘要:
AbstractIndomethacin (10 mg/kg, p.o.) was used to induce gastric and duodenal ulcers of varying severity (scored as 1–9) in albino rats.Croton penduliflorusseed oil crystals (CP crystals) were administered to groups of rats at varying doses (6, 12, and 18mg/kg, p.o.). The ulcers observed in groups treated with indomethacin and CP crystals consisted mainly of the hyperemic conditions with one or two lesions (scored as 1–3) and medium sized lesions of moderate depth (scored as 4–6). Severe lesions with large diameter and depth (scored as 7–9 severity) observed in the control group treated with indomethacin only were absent in indomethacin and CP crystals treated groups. CP crystals offered significant (p<0.05) protection against gastric ulcers when given at 12 mg/kg and against duodenal ulcers when given at 6, 12 and 18 mg/kg. The maximum cytoprotection against duodenal ulcers was observed in rats treated with 18 mg/kg of CP c

摘要:
AbstractThe spasmolytic activity of the essential oil ofThymus longiflorusBoiss was investigated in an attempt to identify the component or components responsible for such action. The essential oil was found to present a marked spasmolytic activity against acetylcholine via a non‐competitive type of antagonism, attributable mainly to the terpenic fraction, particularly the presence of a‐pinene and camph

摘要:
AbstractEryngium billardieriDelar., used as a folk medicine in Turkey for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, was investigated for its antiinflammatory activity by various methods. Fractions obtained from the aerial parts and roots ofE. billardieriwere tested in mice for their effects on increased vascular permeability induced by acetic acid intraperitoneally, and serotonin, bradykinin, and carrageenan‐induced edemas. A significant antiinflammatory activity was observed only in the precipitated part of the butanol extract of the roots, which contains saponin
