Summary.The development and pilot testing of the Professional Decisions and Values Test (PDV) is described. The PDV is designed to assess how ethical conflicts are dealt with by medical and law students and which moral values motivate them. Data from two consecutive classes of entering medical and law students are presented and their action tendencies and ethical values are compared. The findings support the construct validity of the test. Regarding reliability, stability over time is present for action tendencies but not for values. Perhaps the ethical values of entering medical and law students do not become stable until later. Change in ethical values can be studied with the PDV for groups, not individuals, during the first year of professional education.

Summary.The specific anxieties of 74 medical students beginning their clinical training were assessed by means of a questionnaire at the start of the clinical introductory course at St Mary's Hospital Medical School, London. Situations differed in the amount of anxiety that they engendered, and students also differed in the number of situations that they found anxiety producing. Students particularly reported that interactions with senior staff on ward rounds were anxiety provoking. The same questionnaire was also distributed to 52 teaching hospital doctors who were asked to complete the questionnaireas they thought the students had done.Compared with students, the doctors considered more situations to be anxiety provoking, and they differed in their rank ordering of the situations. Doctors tended to overestimate anxiety concerning communication problems, and to underestimate anxiety concerning routine clinical tasks such as phlebotomy.

Summary.In spite of the increasing number of women medical students, in many specialties the number of women actually working as doctors still lags behind the number of men working in the same profession. To define factors contributing to this discrepancy 646 medical students at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam were surveyed. A questionnaire was used to obtain information about the difference between women and men medical students concerning their outlook on a future career as combined with domestic responsibilities. The questionnaire covered the items motives and career preference, barriers to reaching the profession of first choice, career planning and the combination of domestic responsibilities and a medical career. The results of this survey indicate that there are still important differences between women and men students in career perspectives. These differences need attention from medical students as well as teaching staff.

Summary.In an effort to evaluate the first part of the rural field attachment programme at the University of Zimbabwe Medical School, a self‐assessment questionnaire was administered to the first‐year students. Assessment criteria were derived from the stated aims of the school's new undergraduate medical curriculum. The results indicate that students view the programme as relevant and of value to their training as future doctors, even though they were dissatisfied with aspects of the programme. There was some evidence that more emphasis should be placed on the limitations on what doctors can do to solve the health problems of rural Zimbabweans. Contrary to previous opinions of some individuals, students whose homes are in rural areas benefited from the programme and found it of value. Summary.Findings are presented from a survey of all medical students at the College of Medicine, Abha, Saudi Arabia dealing with students' attitudes towards specialization in psychiatry. The health region of Asir in south‐west rural Saudi Arabia, of about one million inhabitants, needs Saudi Nationals to specialize in psychiatry to provide planned future delivery of services. Medical students all over Saudi Arabia, however, have not been choosing psychiatry for their specialization after graduation. The Scientific Committee for Mental Health, convened at the Ministry of Health in Riyadh in February 1986, invited representatives of psychiatry from medical schools in the nation to discuss this priority topic. A year later, a new course called ‘Introduction to Psychosomatic Medicine’ was introduced as an elective for medical students with its practice at the general hospital. It tries to introduce students to ‘voluntary and active as against passive learning … and problem‐solving rather than imposed memorizing’ of medicalized forms of psychiatry, an innovation compared with the previous conventional method. A significant difference in attitude was demonstrated between students who had their exposure to psychiatry from this course and those who followed only the conventional method
