摘要:
SummaryThe modern medical school in the Soviet Union today is undergoing many different and significant changes. The chief consideration of great importance is that today's students are the doctors of the future, and the health of the community will be in their hands.

摘要:
SummaryFifty‐nine students who had previously taken degrees or commenced careers in subjects other than medicine entered the Cambridge Clinical Course in its first 5 years of operation, commencing in 1976. A questionnaire was used to ascertain their original career plans when entering medical education, their career plans in 1981, and the reasons for any changes. Graduates originally planning careers in general practice and teaching or research maintained their intentions, but some of those who had favoured hospital clinical work changed their minds in favour of general practice. General practice was also the most common choice amongst those students who were earlier unsure as to what branch of medicine they would enter. Of students changing their career intentions, half indicated that disenchantment with hospital medicine was a prime reason for the chang

摘要:
SummaryAn elective modules programme in the behavioural sciences was designed for the undergraduate medical curriculum at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. The programme provides a mechanism by which a broad range of behavioural science content can be introduced into the curriculum without increased allocation of teaching staff or budget. Student preference data indicate some clear differences with the more popular modules being those which focus on skills or behaviours that students perceive to be useful in the immediate practice of medicine. The elective aspect of the programme was part of its initial appeal, both to students and teaching staff. Two years of course evaluation data from the students indicate that most individual modules and the programmes as a total have been successful in achieving their intentions. The programme has now been included as a permanent component of the curricula.

摘要:
SummaryTwo studies are reported which examine the use and credibility of patients' reports of medical students' clinical interviewing skills. In the first study patients' high satisfactionviaa standard rating form tended to match clinicians’ assessment of second‐year students' history‐taking and physical examination skills. A second study used pre‐defined ‘ideal’ and ‘not‐ideal’ bedside roles by a small group of fourth‐year students to examine how perceptive or tolerant hospital inpatients are about clinical interviews, whether this effect is sex‐linked, and consequently how useful direct and indirect information obtained from patients is in training medical students

摘要:
SummaryA study was carried out to investigate the change in attitudes towards physically disabled people of a group of fifty‐eight medical students during the first 3 years of their course. The students attended a newly established medical school which has developed a curriculum without the traditional division into preclinical and clinical years and where contact with patients occurs from the first year. Results demonstrated that, as expected, at the start of the course the attitudes of females towards disabled people were more positive than those of males. Also, a significant change in attitudes was found after 3 years, both males and females demonstrating more positive attitudes toward physical disability. The differences between males and females were maintained. The relationship between these students' attitudes and their behaviour was discussed and proposals for further research to investigate this are outline

摘要:
SummaryWhile sexual medicine is increasingly being seen as an integral part of medical courses, it is difficult to introduce to and integrate into existing curricula. This paper presents an hierarchical model for design of sexual medicine courses which takes into account factors such as environmental constraints (time, money, staff), objectives, content, teaching methods, sequencing, implementation and evaluation. The format of the model is an attempt to address the problems which lead to the necessity to provide courses in sexual medicine to undergraduate medical students.

摘要:
SummarySkills in reviewing medical charts have been demonstrated components of clinical competence related to knowledge base, level of clinical experience, and basic observational skills. A study of the generalizability of performance on chart review exercises, which controlled for knowledge in the content area, was undertaken to determine their potential in evaluating students' problem‐solving ability. Results of the study indicate that the case specificity which has characterized simulated problem‐solving tasks is largely case, rather than content, specificity: correlations between scores on single charts demonstrated no consistent relationships for measures of proficiency, efficiency, and diagnostic accuracy. However, averaging the scores on two charts and then computing correlations resulted in significant positive measures for both proficiency and efficiency. The effects of length and difficulty level on the generalizability of tests of problem‐solving ability are areas suggested for future res

摘要:
SummaryFinal‐year medical students at the University of Bristol were asked to outline a plan of management for an elderly female patient who presented with several problems. These problems were presented in the form of a ‘patient management questionnaire’. This questionnaire was completed before and again after a 9‐week course that included a 3‐week attachment to two general practitioners. The patterns of answers were compared to look for modifications in the plan of management that could be attributed to the teaching. The results indicate a broader plan of management after the course with more students considering the physical, social and family needs of the patient, rather than the clinical problems alone. Nevertheless, further experience of this method of assessment is needed before the technique can be considered a useful tool in the evaluation of general practice

摘要:
SummaryA review of the computerized house job matching programme for 1981–82 and 1982–83 in the principality of Wales is reported. A substantial number of students (up to 35%) obtained jobs before the start of the programme in 1981 and 58% of posts were allocated outside the computer system. In contrast, following active encouragement to adhere to the procedure, a dramatic improvement in operation was achieved in 1982–83; less than 5% of posts were allocated privately. The experience suggests that for large areas involving many jobs, the computer matching programme may be a most suitable means of allocating these posts. Further consideration should be given for the setting up of a United Kingdom national computerized matching prog
