摘要:
Critical care nurses routinely care for patients who require chest tube management. To obtain the best patient outcome, critical care nurses develop standards of practice from research derived recommendations. Although there are several studies recommending chest tube management practices, there is limited research in some areas of chest tube management. The authors analyze the body of research and recommend clinical practice changes and timely research projects on chest tube management.

摘要:
Several types of pulsatile Ventricular Assist Devices are now being used to stabilize patients while awaiting cardiac transplant. Because of the progressing design of these devices the nurse needs to understand the different operations and complications for the varying designs and how to prevent complications for these patients.

摘要:
Patients in critical care units are at risk for an altered nutritional status related to the increased nutritional demands of illness and the fact that many patients are unable to eat for a variety of reasons. The percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube is an alternative to gastrostomy tube placement to provide nutritional support to the critically ill patient, yet some complications can occur. This article reviews nursing interventions that decrease complications for the patient with a PEG tube.

摘要:
There is a fine distinction between life-saving measures and life-sustaining ones. In the case presented below the husband of a wife with cancer did not understand the continuation of life-sustaining treatment after the decision to reject life-saving measures was made. This resulted in a conflict between the husband and physician that placed the nurse, as family advocate, in the middle. The case is followed by an analysis with recommendations on how to handle this type of situation.

摘要:
Although families can provide important support for individuals with life-threatening illnesses or injuries, the highly technological nature of critical care often limits opportunities for family involvement. While critical care nurses are seldom family specialists, they frequently provide support and assistance to patients' families. This paper describes four types of questions drawn from the family therapy literature that can be used by nurses who are not mental health specialists to support families and mobilize their problem solving skills. A case model of a head-injured child demonstrates the use of these questions with a family. These questions should be useful for the brief, problem-focused, family encounters which characterize critical care settings.
