The subcellular distribution of the blood group antigen A in the transitional epithelium of the urinary tract and its neoplastic growths was studied using transmission immuno‐electronmicroscopy. Sixty‐five tissue specimens from 50 blood group A1patients were processed according to an immunogold procedure which was optimized for preservation of both antigen and ultrastructure. The reactions were stronger in the glycocalyx of the luminal surfaces and at the interdigitating cytoplasmic processes of the cells. In the intracellular compartment the reactions were associated with tubulovesicular membrane‐bound structures and with the Golgi complexes. Secretory products, intra‐ or extra‐cellular, were also positive. The greatest variability was noted in the cell surface reactions, which were positive in 88% of normal but only 41% of neoplastic urothelial specimens. The expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF) andc‐myconcogene product was studied immunohistochemically in 65 benign and malignant human thyroids. Normal thyroid tissues were usually negative with each antibody. Benign and malignant neoplastic thyroid tissues demonstrated a high percentage of stained cells. However, there was no significant difference in positivity between benign and malignant neoplastic tissues. In Graves' disease 25% of the cases were positive for EGF, and 100% forc‐mycproduct. The effect of EGF orc‐mycexpression on prognosis was also examined in 42 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma. When the cases were divided into two groups with regard to their EGF staining score (highly‐expressed and poorly‐expressed groups), the frequency of highly‐expressed tumours was significantly higher in the recurrence‐positive group compared with the recurrence‐free group (86%vs57%), but there was no significant difference between the groups in respect of

An immunophenotypic study of 17 cases of diffuse lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease and 20 cases of nodular lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease, along with eight of mixed cellularity and five of nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's disease, is reported. The atypical cells in nodular lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease showed only minor differences from the published consensus. However, the atypical cells in diffuse lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease showed an immunophenotype which was commonly B‐cell positive (59%), but in a minority of cases (24%) or epithelial membrane antigen (12%) positive; none of the cases was Ber‐H2 positive. These results do not differ greatly from our findings in nodular lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease, but do diverge from the published consensus for diffuse lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease. The CD30 antigen is a characteristic phenotypic feature of Sternberg‐Reed and Hodgkin cells and is also found in a subset of large cell non‐Hodgkin's lymphomas. The finding of CD30 positive cells in some centroblastic/centrocytic (cb/cc) follicular lymphomas prompted us to characterize the presence and distribution of CD30 positive cells in this type of lymphoma, using the monoclonal antibody BerH2. CD30 positive cells were present in 17/19 of the cases studied, located mainly at the edge of the neoplastic follicles, but also in some cases in perinodular or T‐cell areas. This distribution resembles that found in reactive tonsils and lymph nodes. The majority of these CD30 positive cells in cb/cc lymphoma seem to be B‐cells, as suggested by their reactivity with B‐cell markers demonstrated by double immunostaining. We report a case of malignant lymphoma in the soft tissues exhibiting prominent myxoid stromal changes and cord‐like cellular arrangement, mimicking the architectural as well as cytological features of myxoid chondrosarcoma, except for the absence of tumour lobulation. The only clue to the possible lymphomatous nature of the lesion was the past history of lymphoma. Immunohistochemical studies showed that this represented a B‐cell lymphoma, staining positively for leucocyte common antigen and five B‐lineage markers L26, MB2, B1 (CD20), B4 (CD19) and To15 (CD22). Two cases are reported of intra‐abdominal small cell tumours expressing concomitant neural and epithelial differentiation. These features were discernible on conventional microscopy and supported immunocytochemically. Immunoreactive vimentin was also revealed in both tumours, and, in addition, one showed focal desmin positivity. Epithelial differentiation in both tumours was confirmed ultrastructurally. We have studied 74 benign intramuscular angiomas in order to try and correlate clinical behaviour with histological appearances. The purpose was to find means of predicting those which would recur. Mean age at presentation was 17.6 years and 85% of the cases presented before age 30. The male: female ratio was 1.4:1. Anatomical distribution was 32% lower limb. 27% head/neck, 24% upper limb and 17% trunk. Reliable histological subclassification proved impossible since almost all lesions were of mixed type, albeit often with a single predominant vessel type—of which venous (42%) was the most common. Over 90% of the lesions contained a variably prominent adipocytic component. More than 50% of patients suffered local recurrence. Goblet cell carcinoids are uncommon but distinctive tumours of the appendix. We have reviewed 11 cases diagnosed within the period 1976‐1990. The mean age at presentation was 58 years (range 24–76), with a female: male ratio of 8:3. At presentation, in seven patients tumour was confined to the appendix or mesoappendix (mean age 51) and in four there was extension beyond the appendix (mean age 69). Of the seven patients with localized tumour, six are alive and without clinical disease after a mean follow‐up period of 32 months and one died with recurrent tumour after 10 years. Of the four with more extensive disease, two died during follow‐up (at 23 months with probable liver metastases and at 16 months with intestinal obstruction) and two are alive, one with disease and one clinically disease‐free. Immunohistochemistry showed that all of the tumours stained positively for either neuron‐specific enolase, chromogranin A or protein gene product 9.5. The clinical, microscopical, immunocytochemical and ultrastructural features of five cases of benign mesenchymal proliferative lesions of the urinary bladder, mimicking sarcoma, are presented. Four of the five patients are alive and disease‐free following diagnosis, an interval ranging from 9 months to 9 years, mean 4 years.
