The paper shows that a least-biased estimate of the failure probability of a structural component or structure with random loads and strengths may be calculated by using the maximum entropy distribution. The method permits the probability of failure to be calculated directly from statistical load and strength data without the need to choose analytical distributions to represent the data. Comparative tests show that the MED-based method generates accurate failure probabilities. The sensitivity of failure probability values to changes in the statistical data is studied and is found to be very high. The fourth statistical moment of the data is found to be at least as important as the first and second moments in a sensitivity context. This implies that very accurate statistical data on load and strength is essential if confidence is to be placed in any calculated failure probability. Results show that inaccuracies in the data can lead to errors in failure probability values which can be measured in hundreds of percent and sometimes in orders of magnitude.

In the collection of data on environmental health, individuals are frequently reluctant to be entirely candid with surveyors because of concern over the confidentiality of responses. A standard procedure is to inoculate the response with random modification (or error) so that it becomes impossible to identify individual respondents but quite possible to generate unbiased statistical summaries of the entire sample. This paper is directed at generating methods for such random inoculation and abstracting from the inoculated results those conclusions concerning sample response and population estimates. A numerical example of a bivariate randomized procedure is given.

摘要:
This paper predicts the probability of failure or short and long columns of square reinforced concrete for deterministic and probabilistic loads. The effect of various parameters; width, length of column, effective length coefficient, percentage of steel, axial load, grade of concrete and random numbers; on the probability of failure of the column is studied. The material, geometric parameters and the load are treated as probabilistic. The results for short columns show that the rate of decrease of probability of failure is a maximum with increase in width, while it increased to a maximum with increase in loads, whereas for long columns the length of column had the predominant effect.

Significant progress has been made recently in the design of optimization models to mimic the decision making process of reservoir operators. Several of these models for real-time, short term reservoir system operation are described. The models include: an optimization model constructed specifically for a multi-reservoir, multipurpose system in Kentucky; a goal programming model that requires less information than most other models yet may yield equivalent or better results; a chance constrained model that explicitly considers errors in streamflow forecasts in the operating environment; and a balancing model that uses cumulative distribution functions to maintain a balance between storage, release, and any other characteristic of the operation. Each model is briefly described and comparisons between models are made. These models represent the initial development of an expert system for real-time reservoir system operation.

This paper attempts to solve the problem of optimal design of both water collection and distribution networks, using a Modular In-core Nonlinear Optimization System (MINOS). Both models are user oriented, arrive at a discrete solution and can handle large systems efficiently. Pre- and post-processors are used to handle input and output data respectively. Network optimal design aspects such as transformation of variables, loop defining algorithms, reliability of redundant links, and the discretization problem are discussed. Four examples are solved to demonstrate the proposed model's capabilities.

摘要:
The systems theory component in the undergraduate and graduate programs in civil engineering at the University of Manitoba is reviewed. Proposals for increasing the systems theory content in the undergraduate program arediscussed. The primary element in the proposals is the 'lowering' of the basic civil engineering systems course currently in the graduate program, into the undergraduate program. It is anticipated that this course will first be introduced as a technical elective in the fourth year of the program. The long range plan is to place this course in the second year of the program. The implications of this approach for the graduate and undergraduate programs are analysed.

The extra quality is a set of attitudes, some of which, holism, realism and flexibility, can be encouraged by university teaching.
