摘要:
This paper proposes a model of the design process. The model applies to single storey non-domestic timber roof structures, and has been developed as part of a project to create an expert system for the above domain. Although intended to be used in timber roof design many of the concepts apply to structural design in general. The model is still in the early stages of development and is presented here in order to elicit comment from other designers.

摘要:
The paper examines the influence of heterogeneous behaviour on the output of finite source queues. Specifically general procedures are established for deterministic assumptions which by analogy with the homogeneous case should provide an upper bound on queue output. Consideration of priority treatment of customers arises when customers present themselves for service simultaneously. Different priority and heterogeneity assumptions result in different output and suggest an optimization of queue behaviour. The results are applied to earthmoving-type operations employing loading equipment (as servers) and hauling equipment (as customers'). Such operations are characteristically heterogeneous and also finite source; their treatment to date has been through approximations and the solution of the homogeneous case.

摘要:
Water distribution networks, like other engineering systems, are subjected to random.failures. The failures may occur in the elements of the network (mostly pipes) or in the nodes (pipe junctions and demand nodes). Since a breakdown in water supply is not acceptable for more than a few hours, the network should be invulnerable to some extent, that is, it must include several independent alternatives of water supply to every consumer. Adopting an invulnerability degree of two alternative supplies, a new methodology is presented for the least-cost design of water distribution networks. According to this methodology the design process is controlled by the designer via three distinct stages. In the first stage the alternative paths are allocated using graph theory algorithms. In the second stage the minimum hydraulic capacity (diameters) of each path is determined using a linear programming model, and in the third stage the solution is tested by a network solver for various demand patterns. An example for the first stage and its relevant graph theory algorithms are included.

摘要:
The fixed-charge plant location problem determines the sites at which to place central treatment facilities as well as the assignments of communities to those facilities. We show here that the mathematical programming dual of a special version of the plant location model provides cost allocations to the communities which satisfy the core conditions of an n-person cooperative game. These cost allocations are faulted- because they may fail to provide equity among the participants. A new methodology is proposed, the Separable Costs Opening Cost method (SCOC), to allocate costs among the participants once the optimal set of facilities and coalitions has been determined. The SCOC is guaranteed to determine allocations which are insidexhe core and hence increase the fairness of the allocation.

摘要:
On the basis of an extensive literature survey a set of factors that affect traffic safety on bridges was identified. These were grouped into three categories: bridge related, approach roadway related and environmentally related. A detailed accident analysis of a selected number of bridges in the state highway system of Indiana was conducted to verify these factors and to obtain insights into bridge accidents.

摘要:
At present, well established practices for the analysis of construction costs exist. However, a need to scrutinize with more detail the construction cost components may arise when a possibility of employing various resources to construct a project is present. Two mathematical models that allow the performance of such analyses are presented and suggestions for further research are given. The presented procedures could also be utilized as a tool to determine new required performance for equipment in large volume projects.

摘要:
An approach is presented to estimate pollutant loads and concentrations in runoff using fuzzy sets. In introducing uncertainty in water quality simulation models, fuzzy sets seem as appropriate as other techniques to represent the variability of the model's parameters and to predict pollutant loads with a measure of their uncertainty. In addition, the numerical implementation is efficient compared to other schemes. A modified version of the Storm Water Management Model that includes fuzzy sets is presented with the associated calibration method. Application of the procedure is illustrated for two watersheds and several pollutants.
