摘要:
SUMMARYThe quality of a telephone survey is affected by several factors: telephone coverage, non‐response, the methods used to select households and persons, and the quality of responses obtained from respondents. Data are provided which show that a large proportion of Australian households have telephone connections. However, telephone coverage is not uniform and some subgroups of the population have much lower connection rates. This paper reviews evidence of the effect of non‐response and the effectiveness of repeated call backs, and reports the results of a new study. The use of quota sampling to select respondents from randomly selected households is also examined. The results suggest that telephone surveys under‐represent older persons and the unemployed, and over‐represent middle‐aged persons. It is shown that while call backs can increase the response rate, the effect on the composition of the sample and resulting estimates is minimal. The main effects are due to refusals and variation in cover

摘要:
SUMMARYWhen gathering randomised rather than direct responses on a variable of interest relating to sensitive issues, one may use a modified version of the well‐known generalised regression predictor of a finite population total. To construct confidence intervals, this paper proposes four alternative variance estimators – modifications to those usable with direct responses – and examines their relative efficiencies through simulations from simple super‐population

摘要:
SUMMARYIn a sample survey, questions requiring personal or controversial assertions often give rise to resistance. A randomised response procedure can be used to help the researcher gather accurate data in this case. This paper describes a new two‐stage unrelated randomised response procedure that combines the use of two randomisation devices (Mangat&Singh, 1990) and an unrelated question (Horwitzet al. 1967). It examines the situation where the respondents are not completely truthful in their answers. The efficiency of this new method is compared with the original one‐stage procedure proposed by Horwitzet al. (1967), and guidelines for choosing the values of different parameters for the procedures are provided. Results from an empirical study which examines the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed method are gi

摘要:
SUMMARYA method of estimation for generalised mixed models is applied to the estimation of regression parameters in a proportional hazards model with time dependent frailty. A parameter representing change over time is introduced and is modelled in turn into a fixed effect, a normally distributed random effect and a longitudinal effect in which the random component relates to the patient characteristics. Both maximum likelihood and residual maximum likelihood estimators are given.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe paper illustrates a typical pitfall associated with a conventional interpretation of components of smooth tests of fit, for example the first nonzero components of the smooth tests for Poissonity, exponentiality, normality and the geometric distribution. In order to achieve a directed diagnosis concerning the kind of departure from a hypothesised model, an appropriate rescaling of components is necessary.

摘要:
SUMMARYWhen a new observation is to be classified into one of several multivariate normal populations with different means and the same covariance matrix, by Rao's method of scoring, the chance of misclassification is expressed as a multiple integral. This paper gives a practical method of obtaining reasonable approximations to this integral by using tables prepared by Gibbons, Olkin&Sobel (1977) for a different task.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis paper proposes a new measure of rotatability of a response surface design. It is based on a comparison between the design moments of a given design and the design moments of a rotatable design closest to the given design in the least squares sense. This measure is easier to calculate than Khurľs measure. An alternative easier non‐geometrical way of deriving Khuri's measure is also presented. Both measures are calculated to illustrate some designs considered by Khu

摘要:
SUMMARYA general method is presented for randomising a block design while preserving the neighbour relationships between treatments. The randomisation possesses validity properties for the first‐difference analysis introduced by Besag&Kempton (1986). The estimators of treatment differences are unbiased, and the paper shows how to calculate quadratic estimators of their variance, which are unbiased if treatment effects and plot effects are additive. Simplifications, which appear when the design is neighbour‐balanced, are described and illustra
