SummaryKumar and Patel (1971) have considered the problem of testing the equality of location parameters of two exponential distributions on the basis of samples censored from above, when the scale parameters are the same and unknown. The test proposed by them is shown to be biased forn1≠n2, while forn1=n2the test possesses the property of monotonicity and is equivalent to the likelihood ratio test, which is considered by Epstein and Tsao (1953) and Dubey (1963a, 1963b). Epstein and Tsao state that the test is unbiased. We may note that when the scale parameters ofkexponential distributions are unknown the problem of testing the equality of location parameters is reducible to that of testing the equality of parameters inkrectangular populations for which a test and its power function were given by Khatri (1960, 1965); Jaiswal (1969) considered similar problems in his thesis. Here we extend the problem of testing the equality ofkexponential distributions on the basis of samples censored from above when the scale parameters are equal and unknown, and we establish the likelihood ratio test (LET) and the union‐intersection test (UIT) procedures. Using the results previously derived by Jaiswal (1969), we obtain the power function for the LET and fork= 2 show that the test possesses the property of monotonicity. AbstractRandom samples are assumed for the univariate two‐sample problem. Sometimes this assumption may be violated in that an observation in one “sample”, of sizem, is from a population different from that yielding the remainingm—1 observations (which are a random sample). Then, the interest is in whether this random sample of sizem—1 is from the same population as the other random sample. If such a violation occurs and can be recognized, and also the non‐conforming observation can be identified (without imposing conditional effects), then that observation could be removed and a two‐sample test applied to the remaining samples. Unfortunately, satisfactory procedures for such a removal do not seem to exist. An alternative approach is to use two‐sample tests whose significance levels remain the same when a non‐conforming observation occurs, and is removed, as for the case where the samples were both truly random. The equal‐tail median test is shown to have this property when the two “samples” are of the same size
