摘要:
Thirty asymptomatic men with gonorrhoea were studied. No significant difference was seen in spermiogram (semen volume, sperm count, motility, velocity and normal morphology) and most of the seminal constituents studied (fructose, ascorbic acid, calcium, sodium, potassium, chlorides and magnesium) between this group of men and those of a normal control group. Citric acid levels were significantly lower in men with gonorrhoea (P<0.002), suggesting a non‐acute prostatitis. No significant difference was observed in the studies before and after treatmen

摘要:
Considerable evidence exists to indicate that the Leydig cells influence the seminiferous tubule by maintaining a high concentration of testosterone in the peritubular compartment of the testes. Recent studies using various types of agents to disrupt spermatogenesis, have shown that significant changes occur in the structure and function of the Leydig cells. In these situations, Leydig cells enlarge, show hyperresponsiveness to hCG stimulation in vitro and contain a reduced number of receptors for LH/hCG. Evidence is presented to support the hypothesis that the changes in Leydig cell structure and function are the result of local factors. The data provide support for the concept that the functioning of Leydig cells is modulated by the seminiferous tubules.

摘要:
Meiotic studies in a sterile carrier of a 14/21 translocation showed a meiotic arrest, with degeneration of primary spermatocytes. Silver staining of pachytene cells revealed the presence of a trivalent. Its synaptonemal complex was quite similar to that described in previous light and electron microscopy studies in mammalian species. The observation of a trivalent with pairing in trans‐configuration and the presence of desynaptic synaptonemal complexes in early pachytene could explain the relatively high incidence of non‐disjunction in human D/G translocations and the spermatogenic disintegration sometimes seen in these ca

摘要:
Spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis are 2 important functions of the testis. It is well known that the 2 pituitary hormones, namely FSH and LH, regulate these functions of the testis. Based on the early work of Greep et al. 1936; Greep&Fevold 1937), FSH is held to be responsible for control of spermatogenesis and LH for testosterone production. However, the precise role of FSH in spermatogenesis is not clear. We used specific and potent antisera to FSH to neutralize this hormone and study its role in spermatigenic function of the immature and adult rat (Madhwa&Dym 1976; Madhwa Raj et al. 1980). Our earlier work on the rat demonstrated the need for FSH during the first wave of spermatogenesis, but not in the adult rat. Further, the precise role of FSH in spermatogenesis of primates including the human male is also not clear. In view of this, we have undertaken studies to examine the effects of neutralizing FSH activity on spermatogenesis in the monkey, M fasicularies.

摘要:
Sperm maturation in the rat epididymis is dependent on the secretion of specific proteins by the epididymal epithelium and subsequent interaction of these proteins with spermatozoa. Evidence has shown that fertility and motility development of epididymal spermatozoa may be impaired by interfering the interaction of these proteins with spermatozoa. When the spermatozoa reach the cauda epididymidis, they are fully mature but their longevity is maintained by being stored in a quiescent state in the cauda. The unique ionic medium therein (low Na+, low Ca2+, high K+and low pH) suppresses sperm motility and hence reserving energy for the vital processes of capacitation and fertilization. During ejaculation, when the spermatozoa are mixed with the copious secretion from the accessory glands they burst into vigorous motility. This results from an influx of sodium coupled to efflux of K+and H+across the mature sperm membrane. In the presence of a peptide secreted by the cauda epididymidis, these ionic events activate the already mature but otherwise inactive spermatozoa to full motility.

摘要:
Only a very small portion (4–7%) of the hyaluronidase of rat sperm obtained from the caput or cauda epididymis was released during incubation in capacitation medium for up to 24 h at 37°C. A portion of the cell‐associated hyaluronidase was accessible to external substrates, allowing sperm suspensions to lyse glycosaminoglycans of cumulus clots rapidly, even without capacitation. This process appears to represent the employment of an enzyme bound to the sperm cell, analogous to the use of solid‐phase enzymes in current enzyme tech

摘要:
Portacaval anastomosis in male is known to induce testicular atrophy. The effect of liver revascularization by the right renal artery on the testes of portacaval shunted rats was examined. After shunting, there was a 75% decrease in testis weight compared to the control value and spermatogenesis was blocked in steps 8–9 of spermiogenesis. The in vitro binding of [125I]hCG was only 10% of the control value on a per testis basis and labelled areas in the interstitium of frozen sections subjected to topical autoradiography with [125I]hCG were also strikingly reduced. These parameters were maintained to normality in revascularized shunted rats which displayed also normal copulatory and fertilizing abilities. It is suggested that an adequate blood supply to the liver, as provided by arterialization, can preserve testicular integrity in shunted rats, even though the blood is arterial instead of porta

摘要:
RIA of specific IgG in serum and epididymal fluids following systemic immunization of male rabbits with DNP‐BGG showed a mean IgG epididymal fluid/serum molar ratio of 4.0 times 10‐3, and in epididymal fluid a mean concentration of 3.8 times 10‐7moles/1 or the equivalent in the caudal lumen of 40 000 anti‐DNP IgG molecules/spermatozoon there. This concentration did not change after the distension of the duct seen in the first months after vasectomy nor very markedly in the first 6 days after androgen withdrawal brought by castration. But the mean luminal level of specific IgG did rise some ten‐fold in the cauda subjected to body temperature for 6 days. Consideration is given to the prospect that such levels of antibody could compromise fertility if this were directed against some component that is essential for sperm
