AbstractThis study examines nodulation and some aspects of N2fixation byCasuarina equisetifoliagrowing in Egypt. Plants examined were 2 to 10 years of age, and all were nodulated. Nodules varied from young meristematic lobes on lateral roots to clusters occasionally reaching 10 cm in diameter; they had the characteristic features of theMyrica/Casuarinatype. Nodules became brown, woody and lost their N2‐fixing activities in the late summer months.Acetylene reduction was used to assay nodule activity. Maximum rates of N2(C2H2) fixation were observed at 35 °C. Acetylene reduction by excised nodules was linear for 6 hours, then slowly declined and finally ceased after 10 hours. Variations in N2(C2H2) fixation rates due to season and time of day were also examined. Active fixation was recorded throughout different seasons of the year, except in the late summer months. Diurnal fluctuations showed that N2(C2H2) fixation was higher at night than during the day or afternoon. The results are discussed and compared to the findings of other investigato

AbstractThe programme of protein synthesis accompanying cellular differentiation to the heterocyst following transfer of the blue‐green algaeAnabaena circularisandCylindrospermum sp. (CBSC 1755) from ammonia‐enriched medium to nitrogen‐free medium was determined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of whole proteins during successive intervals of differentiation. Besides this, total proteins and soluble amino acids were determined quantitatively. At least 4 sets of proteins can be distinguished on the basis of the time at which they are synthesized. Besides this, differentiation is distinguishable on the basis of the time at which their synthesis is turned off. AbstractWith several isolates ofT. aquaticusrotund bodies (rbs) have been artificially induced. The most active agents were lysozyme, pronase (not trypsin), cellulase (not α‐amylase or β‐glucosidase), penicillin and some mineral salts. Two modifications of rbs were observed: the vesicular type arising from single cells or filaments and the aggregate‐rbs resulting from secondary associations of several cells or filaments. In both cases the primary event is a partial detachment of the outer layer of cell envelopes followed by its swelling to form a hyaline bleb. AbstractA yeast of the genusCandidawhich is able to grow onn‐alkanes was characterized by biochemical investigations: Crabtree effect, inhibition of ammonium utilization by asparagine, changes in the concentration of polysaccharides mainly concentrated in the cell wall. The yeast was compared biochemically and electron‐microscopically with its pure protoplast population, and the regeneration of the cell wall was studied. In correspondence with the asynchronously developing accumulation of glucan and mannan, electron microscopical studies have first only revealed glucan fibrils. Matrix formation (mannan) occurs only in the second stage of regeneration. After a regeneration period of 9 hours, the polysaccharides in the former protoplast population reached the concentration of the period before enzymatic removal of the cell wall. A tube‐like structure observed by light microscopy during the early stages of regeneration is shown electron‐microscopically to consist of a fibrillar network without matrix. Between newly formed cell wall and plasma membrane, in some cells groups of large flat vesicles were found, whose fracture faces are free of particles. After protoplast formation the invaginations of the plasma membrane arrange themselves in rows one behind the other. HMPOoxydativer Teil des HMP, HMPN, nichtoxydativer HMP‐Teil, ED ENTNER‐DOUDOROFF‐WEG, TG Trockengewichtsowie über den oxydativen und nichtoxy‐dativen HMP beiBacillus subtiliswurde erfaßt durch die Bildung von radioaktiv markiertem CO2und der Markierung der RNS nach Verfütterung von Glucose‐1‐C14 und Glucose‐6‐C14. Der Nachweis des Glucoseabbaus sowohl über den oxydativen als auch über den nichtoxydativen Teil des HMP wurde durch die Radiomarkierung der RNS erbracht und, hierauf aufbauend, eine Methode zur Berechnung dieser beiden Abbauwege entwickelt.
