AbstractThe influence of drugs on the shape and the size of nuclear bodies ofEscherichia colihas been studied by electronmicroscopy and sedimentation experiments. Antibiotics inhibiting protein synthesis but not RNA synthesis decrease the size of the nuclear body. Inhibition of RNA synthesis brings about a disintegration of the compact structure of the nucleoid. From electronmicrographs it can be seen that most drugs cause a condensation of the nucleoplasm into one single coherent region. Inhibition of DNA synthesis does not have much influence on the shape of the nuclear body. It is concluded that mainly the transcription process affects the form of the nuclear body.

AbstractUntersuchungen über die Nährstoffbedürftigkeit einiger Stämme vonPasteurella multocidaundP. haemolyticaführten zur Zusammenstellung chemisch definierter Nährmedien, die als anorganische Bestandteile vor allem Na2HPO4und MgSO4, als Kohlenstoff‐ und Energiequelle Glucose, als Stickstoffquelle Asparaginsäure, Arginin, Glutaminsäure und Serin, als Schwefelquelle Cystin, und als sonstige Wuchsfaktoren Ca‐Pantothenat, Nicotinsäureamid und Orotsäure enthalten. Optimales Wachstum auf diesen Nährmedien wird jedoch nur bei Anwesenheit geringer Mengen komplexer Nährsubstrate (Pepton, Trypton oder Hefeextrakt), die bisher unbekannte Wuchsfaktoren fürP. multocidaundP. haemolyticaent

AbstractElektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen aufgebrochener Konidien vonA. nidulansführten nach Glutaraldehyd‐Osmium‐Fixierung zum Nachweis eines Kern‐assoziierten Körperchens (KK) am Interphasekern. Es liegt dem Nucleolus gegenüber in einer Invagination der Kernhülle und besteht aus zwei stärker kontrastierten diskoiden Einheiten, die durch einen schwächer kontrastierten strukturierten Mittelteil verbunden sind. Im Kerninneren, dem KK benachbart, treten elektronendichte Bereiche auf, die mit den diskoiden Einheiten in Verbindung zu stehen scheinen. Eine Verbindung des Mittelteils mit der Kernhülle fehlt.Wiederholt wurde eine Assoziation zwischen dem KK und multivesikulären Körpern beobachtet, deren mögliche Bedeutung

AbstractThe induction of Lambda prophages in lysogenicEscherichia colicells is started after inactivation of repressor molecules coded for by the prophage genome itself. All agents known to inhibit bacterial DNA synthesis are able to initiate a set of processes resulting in the inactivation of these repressors. In the case of UV light as an inducing agent it is suggested that the UV mediated damages within the bacterial DNA diminish the replication velocity leading through a set of intermediate processes to the inactivation of phage repressors by accumulation of repressor inactivating precursors of DNA synthesis. The analytical function for the dose effect curve is obtained from the product of the probabilityPIof cells containingIUV damages multiplied by the numberIof UV damages after summing up all possible numbers ofI. The probability ofPIis calculated on the basis of the radiation kinetic model ofRONTÓet al.(1972). The theoretical dose effect curve, obtained shows a shoulder with an extrapolation number of 1.2 and a linear part at high irradiation doses in semilogarithmic plot. The experimental data obtained with UV induction ofE. coliK12 (λ) are consistent with the model and show that only a few UV damages smaller than 10 per bacterial chromosome are sufficient for inductio
