AbstractDie Kombination von Morphologie und Chorologie der subgenerischen Einheiten führt zu wichtigen Fragen bei der Bewertung der Untergliederung der Gattung. Ergänzung findet dieses in einer erstmalig vorgenommenen historischen Analyse der GattungRhododendronvor dem Hintergrund geowissenschaftlicher Daten (Paläoklimatologie, Paläogeographie, Paläochorologie, Paläofloristik, Paläoorographie etc.). Dies ergibt ein differenzierteres phylogenetisches Bild von der Entwicklung der Gattung, die, seit ca. 53 Mill. Jahren belegt, in mehreren Etappen in verschiedenen begrenzten Räumen und unter verschiedenen Klimaten erfolgt ist, d. h. während der verschiedenen Stufen des Tertiärs und Quartärs. Das heutige Mannigfaltigkeitszentrum in Südostasien ist dabei historisch‐geologisch betrachtet recht jung (ca. 10–15 Mill. Jahre) und als solches kein primäres, sondern ein durchaus sekundäres. Bis weit in das Alttertiär hinein war Südostasien noch ein Trokkengebiet. Die Differenzierung und Ausbreitung von sehr vielen der heutigen Arten Südostasiens (speziell die der SektionVireya) ist sehr jungen Datums (nur rund 1–5 Mill. Jahre alt). Als älteste Gruppen werden das SubgenusHymenanthus, und zwar die Sektion/SubsektionPontica, das SubgenusPentantheraund Teile des SubgenusRhododendron, Sekt./Subsekt.Rhododendron(Ferruginea) und Carolineana, resp. ihre Vorläuferformen, angesehen. Sie allein weisen auch heute noch in ihren Reliktarealen auf eine ursprüngliche nordtethyanische, laurasische, warm‐humide, extratropische laurophylle Gürtelflora des Alttertiärs hin, die sich vom westlichen Nordamerika über das östliche Nordamerika, Europa bis hin nach Mittelusien erstreckt hat. Dies ist der Ursprungs‐Florenbelt der GattungRhododendron. In diesem Belt fand im Eozän durch zonale klimatische Unterschiede die erste, wichtigste Differenzierung der Gattung statt. wobei die ursprünglich immergrünen, alepidoten Vertreter im Süden in die lepidoten und im Norden in die ersten sommergrünen, laubwerfenden alepidoten Typen aufspalten. Der alte zonale Vegetationsbelt zerfällt ab Oligozän in einen westlichen, mittleren (Europa/Vorderasien) und östlichen Teil. Fast alle folgenden Entwicklungsdifferenzierungen sind dann nur noch auf den östlichen Sektor. auf Südost‐ und Ostasien beschränkt, und sie alle sind jünger als Eozän. AbstractThe review deals with the previous and present data on sexchromosomal mechanisms in the plant system ranging from Bryophytes to Angiosperms. Despite widespread unisexuality, only a few species have well defined heteromorphic chromosomes, heterogamety being present either on the male or on the female side. Reversion of sex through chemical treatment in unisexual species with homomorphic chromosomes indicates a delicate balance between sex determining genes and physiological set up in such species.In heteromorphic types, in majority of cases, Y is generally longer than X and the male tendency of Y is stronger than the female tendency of X. Even though heterochromaticity is associated, the amount of DNA may or not differ in two sexes. Sex chromosomes may often be nucleolar. With the gradual polyploidization or aneuploidy, there is often changeing sexuality indicating distinct sex‐chromosomeautosomal balance for sex determination. Evidences suggest that the change from bisexuality to unisexuality and homomorphicity to heteromorphicity in chromosomes had been a short step in evolution possibly occurring in the recent past. AbstractRoot and stem woods of 29 taxa of Caesalpiniaceae were studied in detail with respect to the crystal strands. Although the crystals were of Calcium oxalate nature, variations were recorded in the presence or absence and, if present, in the density of distribution, height, number of constituent cells and pattern of distribution (among other wood tissues) of the crystal strands. The true morphology of the crystal strand is also discussed.

AbstractThe fruits ofCryptolepis buchananiandHemidesmus indicusare follicles. The fruit wall or the pericarp is distinguished into epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp. Epicarp is multilayered in both the fruits, composed of an epidermal layer and a collenchymatous zone of hypodermis. InH. indicusthe collenchymatous zone is filled with tanniniferous contents. The mesocarp is parenchymatous. Vascular bundles are found overarched by cellulosic fibre bundles. Laticifers present in the mesocarp are non‐articulated. AbstractA SEM examination of the epidermis of mature leaves of 42 taxa in six sections ofIxorahas been conducted. The results indicate that all the species and varieties (with the exception ofI. subsessilis) have stomata situated exclusively on the abaxial leaf surface (hypostomatic), guard cells are raised above the subsidiary cells. The position of stomata in relation with the other epidermal cells may be at the same level, or sunken. Prominent peristomatal rims are present around the stomata in most species. Trichomes may be absent or infrequently present in different sections but their presence does not have any bearing on the classification of species. Cell boundaries (clear or not clear) and cuticular ornamentations are significant at the species level, but rarely at higher categories in certain cases.

AbstractMorphological types of stomata, occurrence of stomata on abaxial and adaxial sides of the leaf, and forms of anticlinal walls of epidermal cells have been investigated in 126 species distributed among 33 genera of the subtribe Apiinae. Anomocytic, hemiparacytic, diacytic and paracytic types of stomata have been revealed. There were two groups of species – in the first group stomata with two surrounding cells (diacytic and paracytic) dominated, in the second group there were few (less than 20%) or no stomata of these types.
