AbstractThe paper deals with the behaviour of parameters of wood rays over stem's transverse section as to be found in selected publications as well as in their continuance over the stem length according to own additional investigations. Considered are height, number and portion of uniseriate rays in peripherical wood of the mature tree speciesPinus silvestrisL.,Picea abies, (L.)KARST.,Pseudotsuga menziesii(MIRB.)FRANCO,Larix deciduaMILL., andTaxodium distichumRICH. With increasing tree height ray height decreases, number of rays more or less increases, and ray portion decreases only withPinus silvestrisandPicea abies.

AbstractThe comparative anatomical study of ten species ofSidaoccurring in Nigeria was carried out. The anatomical characters of the matured leaf were examined in order to substantiate taxonomic boundaries between the species. The species possess distinctive anatomical characters which indicate close relationship. However, there is a range in the trichome form; the glandular and non‐glandular; nine kinds of trichomes were recorded. The anatomical characters observed in this study supported the reduction ofS. acutaandS. stipulatatoS. acutasubsp.acutaandS. acutasubsp.carpinifoliarespectively. However, the previous taxonomic decision to splitt theS. rhombifoliacomplex into three subspecies was not supported on anatomical ground

AbstractThe structure of the epidermis and the ontogeny of the stomatal complex of 26 tropical taxa of the family Scrophulariaceae are described. The epidermal cells depict variations with the cells being straight‐walled on both surfaces, straight‐walled on the upper surface only or sinuously walled on both surfaces. Trichomes are also variable. The different types of trichomes observed include unicellular eglandular, peltate glandular and multicellular eglandular. All the investigated species exceptLindernia crustaceaandVeronica abyssinicaare hypostomatic. During the present study three types of stomata are recorded, viz: anomocytic, anisocytic and diacytic types. Anomocytic stomata follow agenous or hemiperigenous ontogenetic development whereas the ontogeny of anisocytic stomata is either hemiperigenous or hemimesogenous.
