The study of behavioural phenotypes and their clinical relevance diagnostically and therapeutically is receiving increasing attention. A clear understanding of their nature, aetiology and implications by child mental health professionals is essential if they are to be of real benefit to clients with such problems and their families. This article addresses these issues and considers historical aspects as well as contrasting clinical approaches to the interface between genetics and child mental health. Important examples of conditions with associated behavioural phenotypes are reviewed followed by a discussion of the importance of diagnosis and the roles and responsibilities of child mental health professionals.

Few cases of child abuse are identified by child care agencies in Japan. Some argue that this is because the culturally specific child care and family relations in Japan make child maltreatment less likely to occur. On the other hand, there are also cultural features that might act to increase the likelihood of child abuse. Explanations for seeming differences in prevalence are discussed, along with a consideration of differences in concepts of appropriate care, child maltreatment, thresholds for case definition, and levels of public and professional awareness about child abuse. Service responses and current developments in child abuse in Japan are also briefly reviewed.

33 out of 39 of the families who belonged to a support group (SWAPS) for parents of children with difficulties which lie in the autistic spectrum, completed a questionnaire about their children's toilet training and any associated problems. The children fell into three groups: untrained (12%), out of nappies for most of the day but needing prompting /on specific programmes (33%), and fully continent (55%). Problems specific to each group are discussed and effective preventative and management strategies reviewed. 27parents (82%) reported difficulties over toileting. Severity of learning difficulty appears to be the main variable which influences the degree of independence which can eventually be achieved. The particular problems presenting in some of the most able children are also addressed.

The paper describes the planning and development of a new children's day resource in Leicestershire. The principles underpinning the clinical work of the day resource team are outlined and an account is given of the new clinical services provided during its first eighteen months of operation. These include assessments of children in groups and with their families, social skills, dramatherapy and psychotherapeutic groups for children, and an innovative day programme for groups of families whose children present with oppositional‐defiant and conduct disorder

The Rutter scales are a pair of short questionnaires for collecting information from parents and teachers about the behaviour of children aged about nine to thirteen years. They focus on emotional and conduct disorders and were designed as screening instruments for epidemiological research. Over the last 25 years they have been used in over 80 studies of various kinds around the world, their psychometric properties have been reported in great detail, and the original scales have been adapted for use with younger children and extended to include items about prosocial behaviours. In this article we summarize the evidence that has accumulated about the scales, provide some guidelines for researchers considering using the scales, and consider some applications for them in the future.
