In June 1990 a conference took place in the Politecnico di Torinowhich was organised by the politecnico, the Brighton Polytechnic, and the Associazione per la Scuola per Esperti delta Produzione with the sponsorship of the British Council. The aim of the conference was to discuss the results obtained after a full four years’ of activity of the school and the graduation of the first group of students. During the conference a paper was presented to illustrate the genesis and activity of the school during the first cycle of life: I think that this paper is of interest for the readers of the SEFI review

摘要:
A short look is taken at the historical development of mechanical drafting, the aim of which through the past centuries, was only to describe machines for purposes of explanation or advertising while, with the industrial revolution, technical drafting had to constitute a guideline in view of the designing and manufacturing of machines and products, becoming technical design. The problems that arose, and which are still present in technical design teaching, beyond the simple learning of conventional standard rules, are then examined. With the introduction of informatics, the possibility to utilize and manipulate standard shapes from computer files, special knowledge of geometry is required, furthermore, physical and mathematical sciences are required as a formative basis to deal with the calculations. An engineering-type education is therefore a necessary and sound basis on which to train the students from the elementary principles of drafting to the appropriate design procedures and then to the techniques of the computer-aided drafting and design.

摘要:
A written questionnaire was submitted to two samples of sophomore students mainly from the Faculty of Engineering at Ban University (Southern Italy). The eight problems proposed in the questionnaire concerned the functioning of simple d.c. circuits. Analysis of the results shows the presence of a common misunderstanding (sequential reasoning) based on a ‘local’ interpretation of the current flow (i.e. the current value at a given position is not influenced by the passive elements not yet ‘encountered’ by the current). This form of reasoning has been found to be very tenacious since it is still largely shared after teaching on circuitry at university level and is present even in students who have passed the physics examination at university. The implications of these results are considered

摘要:
In this paper the results of a systematic investigation into university students’ misunderstandings of d.c. simple circuit operations are reported. These results provide evidence of various misconceptions present before and after the teaching at university level of the topics on d.c. circuits: a battery as a source of constant current; the wrong interpretation of the junctional relation expressed by Ohm's law; power dissipated; resistors in parallel. In conclusion, a brief comment is made on the need to make university teachers aware of these results and on the many difficulties encountered in such an attempt.

摘要:
In this paper, the use of modern computer facilities in education is recognized and criteria are presented for effective system usage. Software-hardware requirements are investigated. Several design factors and interface requirements have also been considered in this study. The organization of the computing centre is investigated in terms of staffing functions to support teaching and management purposes. This work comprises the main issues which should be carefully considered in establishing computer-based information centres in an educational environment.

With the increased use of computers in numerous aspects of everyday life, it is thus very natural for educational institutions to pay specific attention to incorporating computer-related topics into their syllabuses. It is apparent that the mere incorporation of computer-related material into the syllabuses is not enough unless students develop computer consciousness and demonstrate zeal for their usage. With the above realizations in mind, it was decided to monitor the microcomputerization trend amongst the College of Engineering students in King Abdul Aziz University, Jeddah. A questionnaire was designed to collect data about (a) students’ pertinent particulars, (b) their usage of microcomputers, (c) their interest in future computer education and (d) their problems and suggestions. Using random sampling approach, data were collected from more than 200 students—about 10% of the total college strength—and dbase III+ program was developed to analyze this data. The results are revealing and can be very helpful in future planning of the college programme. They indicate that the majority of students use microcomputers, and that a good number of them use personal computers. Fortran and Basic are the two most commonly used languages, and Wordstar the most common commercial package. There is a high level of general interest in computers but inadequate laboratory facilities is the most common problem. The work can be extended to other faculties and even to other institutions to monitor the trends in computer education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

摘要:
Appropriate technology has been applied to design automatic test equipment suitable for training electrical engineers particularly in the developing countries. It is based on an eight-bit 32K BBC microcomputer and a custom-programmed function generator. Together with a digital-to-analog converter and analog-to-digital converter, an automatic test bed was developed which has been used to test linear devices whose properties are frequency sensitive such as audio frequency amplifiers and filters. It involves basic instrument programming in Basic and Assembly Code. The result of the test is plotted on-line on the VDU and a hard copy is later dumped on a dot-matrix printer.
